The ‘ Industry ’ Barge Project
Who built it? • The consensus is that it was built by the Portadown Foundry, Portadown, Co Armagh.
When was it built? • Research to date suggests that it pre-dates 1900, but we are not exactly sure when exactly it was built
Who commissioned it? • The evidence suggests that it was commissioned by the Lambeg Bleaching, Dyeing and Finishing Company who were based at Lambeg, which was served by the Lagan Navigation.
What did it carry? • Coal would seem to have been the main cargo – around 70 tons at a time. This would have been loaded at Belfast Harbour (having been imported from Britain), and then brought up the tidal stretch of the Lagan to the first lock at Stranmillis, and onward along the Navigation thereafter.
How was the Industry powered? • It was probably towed by horse initially, but in later years it was fitted with an internal combustion engine.
