Work to Date • Remediation work began July 2010 Remediation work began July 2010 • As of January 17, completed removal of 14,020 tons (597 trucks worth) of contaminated soil from areas A, C/D and J • Completed removal of crushed concrete and asphalt stockpiles for recycling • Ongoing stormwater and site management activities 6
Dust Control and Air Monitoring • Air monitoring has been taking place Air monitoring has been taking place at the site since dismantlement work began in 2007 • Approved dust control plan on file with BAAQMD • All air monitoring results are reported to DTSC and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) 7
Daily Dust Control Measures Measures in place on work days: p y • Spraying water to suppress dust: • Watering trucks • Hand ‐ held hoses • Water misters on the fence line W t i t th f li • Applying soil tackifier • Washing truck tires • Covering truck loads g • Fence screening • Sweeping of adjacent streets • Covering soil stockpiles • Lowered on site speed limit • Lowered on ‐ site speed limit Air Monitoring Results: Through December 14, 2010, all readings were below the conservative trigger level set for the project. 8
Adaptive Solutions There were 3 days in December (12/15, 12/16 and 12/20) with air y ( ) monitoring readings above the project’s conservative trigger level. In response, we adapted dust control efforts to include: • Additional water misters • Additional wind screen along fenceline • Additi Additional water application l t li ti • Increased use of soil tackifier 9
Adaptive Solutions There have been 6 days in January (1/4*, 1/10, 1/14, 1/17, 1/18, 1/19) y y ( ) with air monitoring readings above the project’s conservative trigger level. In response, we are adapting dust control efforts to include: • Modified water misters • Covered exposed bedrock • Adjusted water application process Adj t d t li ti • Modified equipment/excavation methods *Reading exactly at trigger level 10
Adaptive Solutions We are continuing to adapt the project’s dust control measures. Steps g p p j p that we are in the process of implementing include: • Sprinklers for soil stockpiles • Different type of soil tackifier • Other water-based dust control measures 11
