  1. The Green Infrastructure Strategy MTBK Conference, Szeged Agnes Zolyomi, CEEweb for Biodiversity www.ceeweb.org

  2. CEEweb for Biodiversity • 65 member organisations • In 20 countries • Based in Budapest • We have been active for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development • For the last 20 years! www.ceeweb.org

  3. What is infrastructure? = basic physical and organizational structure necessary to maintain the correct functioning of the society and the economy • Renders services for production and consumption • Long-term investment – profits are generated later on • Longevity – its usability lasts a long time Complementarity of its elements • www.ceeweb.org

  4. Infrastructure Functions Transfer – facilitates the flow of goods, energy and people; • • Service providing – provides services for production and consumption; • Integrative – shapes regional connections (social, economic and communication); • Regional development – the level of infrastructure development raises the attractiveness a region (access to transportation routes, energy, water etc.) and facilitates further development www.ceeweb.org

  6. Green infrastructure = healthy natural environment • Is necessary for the correct functioning of our society and economy! • Constitutes a long-term investment • Is long-lived • Its elements complement each other www.ceeweb.org

  7. Functions of Green Infrastructure • Transfer – rivers, ecological corridors • Service provider – provides ecosystem services • Integrative – improves social relations and integrates the landscape • Regional development – GI enhances the attractiveness of a region and facilitates economic development (ecotourism etc. ) www.ceeweb.org

  9. Green Infrastructure = a tool for providing ecological, economic and social benefits through natural solutions. www.ceeweb.org

  10. Green Infrastructure in the EU • Strategy: Green Infrastructure – Enhancing Europe’s Natural Capital (EC 2013) • Strategically planned network of natural and semi-natural areas with other environmental features designed and manager to deliver a wide range of ecosystem services. It incorporates green spaces (or blue if aquatic ecosystems are concerned) and other physical features in terrestrial (including coastal) and marine areas. On land, GI is present in rural and urban settings. (EC 2013) www.ceeweb.org

  11. EU 2020 Biodiversity Strategy Action 6b of EU Biodiversity Strategy: The Commission will develop a Green Infrastructure Strategy … to promote the deployment of green infrastructure in the EU in urban and rural areas, ... www.ceeweb.org
