The Engineer Design Process
What do we need to know ?
With a little help from… Science On every object on earth acts the gravitational force (weight). On an object which is into water, apart from weight, there is another force exerted on it, called buoyancy. This force has always an upward direction. When an object is placed in the water then it displaces water. Buoyancy depends on the volume of water that the object displaces. The greater the displaced volume, the greater the buoyant force. An object floats when the buoyant force is equal to its weight.
To cut a long story short… If we want our raft to float then its weight should be as small as it gets while its volume should be big enough so that the applied buoyant force is equal to the raft’s weight.
Enough with the talking... Lets start building!!!
