The British Irish Parliamentary Assembly Project Christian Webb & Lizzy Fauvel
• Over 200 members • Reach over 250,000 young people in Wales • Improving lives of vulnerable young people • Support youth workers and youth organisations • Multiple projects
What is BIPA? • Made up of parliamentarians and Assembly Members from across the UK, Channel Islands and Ireland. • Originally set up in 1990 as part of the peace process between the UK and Ireland • They cannot make laws but have a big influence in their respective countries. • They meet twice a year to debate topical issues
What did we do? • 6 young people from Youth Cymru, Youth Scotland, UK Youth (England), Youth Action Northern Ireland and Youth Work Ireland • Came up with 5 general calls and 4 Brexit calls that are common across the 5 Nations.
Dublin • Came together as a group of 30 young people with 9 calls each • Split into committees- Brexit, Public Services, Democracy, Health, Employment and Wellbeing, Education • Mock Parliament • 4 Agreed Brexit Calls
What are the calls? • Ensure the freedom of movement for study, travel, and work in the UK and Ireland, and clarification of citizenship and naturalisation processes for UK and Irish citizens in either country post-Brexit. • Ensure that the voices of young people are heard in the EU negotiations, whether this is on Government Bodies, Committees of Parliament or independent commissions. It is vital that young people are fully involved in this process and our voices are heard • Replace lost EU education, training, and community/youth funding, including Erasmus+, Higher Education Research Funding, education grants, and EU student funding. • Ensure UK maintains environmental standards equal to EU environmental regulations for a commitment against climate change.
Cardiff • Met with BIPA at the Senedd • Great talks and pledges from Parliamentarians • Invited to speak at the meeting the next day
