ASSIGNMENTS THAT TEACH PODCASTING SKILLS Prof. Ben Bogardus, Quinnipiac University benbogardus.com/AEJMC2018
I teach podcasting as storytelling – not “two people talking back and forth.”
• Audio Story • Fairy Tale Story • A Picture Story • Everyone has a Story • Story of a Common Object
Audio Story Construct an audio story using ONLY five sound effects, and ONE spoken word. The story must have a beginning-middle-end structure and be easy-to-follow / understand when played for the class. I provide topics such as “a car crash after texting,” “a lion escapes from a zoo,” “a person gets food poisoning at the cafeteria,” etc. Students must create their own sound effects and/or find them in online sound effects libraries. Teaches: • Basic audio editing and sound effect creation / gathering – only have to worry about one track • Forming a story with beginning-middle-end structure • Thinking about creating an “audio story” – not a “story with audio.”
“Audio Story”
Fairy Tale Story Tell me a classic fairy tale with a modern sensibility – concentrating on creating a personality in your voicing, using sound effects and music, and structuring the story with a BEGINNING-MIDDLE-END Teaches: • Strong voicing and personality-driven hosting • Forming a story with beginning-middle-end structure • Thinking of sound as an integral part of the story, not just something you “throw into a story.” • Intro to audio editing (using Adobe Audition or Audacity) – combining words with sounds with music
“Cinderella”
Picture Story Go to http://100photos.time.com and choose a photo. Using vivid, descriptive writing, music and sound effects, bring me to that time and place and tell me the story about what’s going on Teaches: • Descriptive writing (writing for the ear) • Multi-track editing: combining words, music and sound • Forming a story with beginning-middle-end structure
“The Dust Bowl”
Everyone Has a Story Interview someone about a turning point in his or her life, then tell that story by combining your words/storytelling with their first-person account (You = tell the boring parts and move the story along, them = emotional sound bites) Teaches: • Interviewing skills (have a conversation!) • Choosing soundbites • Telling a non-fiction narrative
“Beating Heroin”
Story of a Common Object Tell me an entertaining story about the history / development of a common object that combine library/internet research with music/sound effects, vivid, descriptive writing, interviews and narrative structure. Teaches: • Putting it all together
“Ballet Shoes”
