SERMON NOTES NOVEMBER 24, 2013 The Freedom to Forget The Freedom to Forget 1 Peter 5:5-7 Pastor John Sloan Intr troduc oducti tion: on: Proud people don’t laugh a lot. They have far too many things about which to concern themselves. Things the rest of us don’t take seriously enough. And what might people think if they fell off a chair or rolled on the ground with a great howl. Their reputations might be stained. Their dignity might be impugned. Here’s the beautiful thing about humility: not only does it honor God but it allows us to enjoy something very precious: freedom . 01. 01. 02. 02. 03. 03. TESTED BY FIRE [A STUDY THROUGH 1 PETER]
SERMON NOTES NOVEMBER 24, 2013 1. Why does Peter specifically address those who are “younger” in v.5? 2. What are some misguided notions of humility, things humility is decidedly not? Which of these false virtues are you most inclined to demonstrate? 3. What does it mean for you to be humble in your relationships with others in the church? 4. Why does God oppose the proud? 5. What is the significance of God’s “mighty hand” in v. 6? 6. Christianity is the only so-called religion where acceptance comes before performance. What does that mean? And how does it motivate us to love and submit to God? 7. What anxieties do you face at the moment? What does it mean to cast them on the Lord? TESTED BY FIRE [A STUDY THROUGH 1 PETER]
SERMON SLIDES NOVEMBER 24, 2013 The Freedom to Forget The Freedom to Forget 1 Peter 5:5-7 Pastor John Sloan 1. 01. Gospel-humility is spontaneous self-forgetfulness that springs from an identity firmly rooted in Christ. 2. “Do not imagine that if you meet a really humble man he will be what most people call ‘humble’ nowadays: he will not be a sort of greasy, smarmy person, who is always telling you that, of course, he is nobody. Probably all you will think about him is that he seemed a cheerful, intelligent chap who took a real interest in what you said to him. If you do dislike him it will be because you feel a little envious of anyone who seems to enjoy life so easily. He will not be thinking about humility: he will not be thinking about himself at all.” C.S. Lewis 3. 02. When we take our eyes off ourselves and humbly trust in God, He will honor us in a way that He deems best. 4. “The hope of the Christian faith is dependent on God’s display of strength, not ours. God is in the business of destroying our idol of self-sufficiency in order to reveal himself as our sole sufficiency. This is God’s way—he kills in order to make alive; he strips us in order to give us new clothes. He lays us flat on our back so that we’re forced to look up. God’s office of grace is located at the end of our rope. The thing we least want to admit is the one thing that can set us free: the fact that we’re weak.” 5. 03. When we grasp the depth of God’s love for us, we’re freed from the constant worries about ourselves, and (finally) able to be genuinely concerned about the needs of others.
