Teach Like a Champion Book Study West Central Elementary 2015-2016
What is this book about? This book is about the tools of the teaching craft. More specifically, it’s about the tools necessary for success in the most important part of the field: Teaching in public schools Serving students born into poverty Students of which the window of opportunity is closing rapidly
Why am I doing this? It is our obligation as your administrators to help you be successful as possible! When you end the day with a sense of accomplishment, when you feel you are both successful and growing more so, you don’t want to transfer to a different school, you do outstanding work, work joyfully each day, and inspire others! This is what makes our school exceptional and filled with champions! We want to continue this trend of being successful and growing professionally to meet or surpass our potential!
Our “Churn Rate” Challenge In 2012-2013 , we had 304 students either enroll or withdraw. In 2013-2014 , we had 301 students either enroll or withdraw. In 2014-2015 , we had 386 students either enroll or withdraw. Our dynamic enrollment presents unique challenges to us and our students in regard to assessment, instruction, and school climate, but we don’t let that stop us !
We have 712 students. ● 55% Hispanic ● 23% African-American ● 14 % White 206 English Learners ● 4% Asian 48 Students with Disabilities 98% Free or Reduced Lunch ● 4% Multiracial
GREAT teachers start to adapt and adjust anything good; they make it fit their own unique style and approach, their setting, and students. The BEST teachers (West Central champion teachers, of course!) find ways to take anything we give them and make it more rigorous. Doug Lemov calls this the Virtuous Cycle: give teachers a good thing, and they make it better, smarter, and faster.
