TANWEER – A PROCESS TOWARDS “SOCIETAL ENLIGHTENMENT” & ARAB RENAISSANCE Ahliyyah School for Girls and Bishop School for Boys, Amman, Jordan By Laila Abdul Majeed, Project Director, AL HIKMA PROJECT LEADER
Introduction • Founded in 1926, and 1936, the Ahliyyah School for Girls and Bishop School for Boys are schools that are rooted but open to the world. We believe in humans and humanity and always strive to break the isolation of education from community and society, with a view to creating societal transformation. • Tanweer was launched in November 2017 opening the space for dialogue on the factors and existing paradigms that impede societal advancement in Jordan
Our Foundation • Our belief in holistic education, and the integrality of mind, body and soul in teaching and learning. • Education cannot work in isolation from society and communities • Learners as teachers and teachers as learners • Societal issues are complex and interconnected and hence learning is inter, intra and trans-disciplinary 3
Our Goals • Revive humanities and social sciences in higher education through the establishment of an integral arts and humanities college • Develop models for education that creates solutions to complex societal issues • Develop models for education that creates knowledge which originates from our roots, our stories and our culture while learning from different sources of knowledge around the world 4
Tanweer Pillars • SOUTH = COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: community as a source of knowledge and an incubator were learning can create societal impact. • EAST = WELLBEING: Teaching and learning contributes to the individual and collective wellbeing (mind, body and soul) • NORTH = ARAB EMANCIPATORY EDUCATION: giving our students the opportunity to critique, imagine, create, and utilize education as a means for emancipation. • WEST = INNOVATIVE LEARNING: innovative teaching and learning methodologies provide opportunities for critical thinking and creativity. • CENTER = ENLIGHTENED HUMANISM: Is the outcome of all the aforementioned pillars, liberating humanity and creating spaces that unite us 5
