Objective Collectively by the end of this session we will have shared good practice guides and suggestions that will enable us all in the future to implement improved methods to focus on Education and Employability Skills for offenders. http://n-ergygroup.com/
The Journey So, as you can see, n-ergy creates a ‘seamless transition’ from custody through to employment and re-integration into the community by; • The delivery of vocational training • The delivery of employability programmes • Specialist recruitment support • Exclusive ‘after care’ ‘Completing a qualification gave me the confidence I needed to start thinking about what I was going to do on the outside.’
Our Contracts Our approach to collaboration is aimed at securing a partnership for n-ergy to become the specialist, chosen sub-contractor. All contractors we partner with secure their funding from: • The Department of Work and Pensions • Ministry of Justice • Sector Skills Councils • Welsh Government • Skills Funding Agency It is our ultimate aim to become a Prime Contractor.
Why we do what we do? • Everyone deserves a second chance and our focus is on helping those inside prisons to develop new skills and gain nationally recognised qualifications which will strengthen their CV for available vacancies. • Our services strengthen the link between offender and employer by initiating a relationship while the individuals are within custody and continuing through their return to the community and employment. • Our aims and objectives are closely aligned with the government's strategies to reduce recidivism linking into LMI, making our communities a safer place to live and provide employment for the hardest to reach. ‘It’s difficult when you have to explain about your conviction because I’m not that person anymore.’

Discussion No job, no hope – a lack of employment support is undermining the rehabilitation of offenders. (Prison Reform Trust) Where is it going wrong? Discuss
Statistics 9.2 million people in the UK have a Criminal Record (Nacro) There are currently 86,090 men and women in custody in the United Kingdom. (The Howard League for Penal Reform) 60% of short term prisoners (serving under 12 months) re-offend within a year of their release & 76% remain jobless . (Ministry of Justice) The cost of reoffending to the tax payer is estimated between £9.5 billion and £13 billion . (Gov.uk) Employment reduces the rate of re-offending by up to 50% (Nacro)
Our ESP The Employment Support Programme • Available to all prisoners within the last 12 weeks of their release. • Providing tailored employment support including CV preparation and interview techniques. • Building relationships with local and national employers to provide live vacancies to those close to their release. • Placing ex-offenders into suitable and sustainable employment on release. • Providing valuable after care support. Research has revealed employment is the single most important factor in reducing reoffending (CIPD)
Tackling Worklessness n-ergy provide training and qualification in HMP Cardiff, G4S HMP & YOI Parc, HMP Swansea, HMP Prescoed and HMP Usk. A local South Wales textiles employer struggled to find Machine Operators to fill their ongoing recruitment needs. After completing the training and qualification, our learners receive help through n-ergy’s ‘Employment Support Programme’ and are placed into suitable and sustainable employment upon their release with ongoing support provided to employer and our candidate. “n-ergy gave me the confidence not to give up on myself and become defined by a criminal conviction.”
Tackling Worklessness A construction agency in Cardiff struggled to fill CSCS Labourer positions on an ongoing basis. The employer spent the day at HMP Cardiff with prisoners completing the Street Work course (Roadworks/ Groundworks). With the constant demand for labourers, they are recruiting ex-offenders on their release on many South Wales contracts. “For the first time in my life I have actually received the help I’ve needed to move forward and progress.”
Facts and Figures 30% of our candidates have been placed into suitable and sustainable employment. 32% of our candidates were placed into construction based roles. 64% of our candidates remained in employment for 6 months or more. 65% of all employers who promote the fact that they employ ex-offenders say that it has had a positive impact on their corporate reputation (source: CIPD)
