Sustainable Inland Fisheries in Wales A vision for fisheries: • Fisheries of Wales are iconic and highly valued • Fish are valued as an important natural resource for Wales and are to be managed within sustainable limits • The status of Welsh fisheries is an indicator of the health and resilience of the natural resources of Wales • Fisheries contribute to viable, vibrant communities in Wales
Sustainable Inland Fisheries in Wales The benefits from ecosystems services are not being optimised. Fisheries context: – Exploitation should only occur where stocks of salmon and sea trout are sustainable – We broadly seek to achieve a measure of equity between rod and net components of the fisheries – Healthy and resilient salmon and sea trout stocks are for the wider benefit of fishermen and fisheries interests, but also for the broader public
Net Fisheries The ‘All Wales NLO 13 different fisheries fish in 10 river estuaries is capped at a total of 45 licences Teifi, Towy, Taf, Nevern, Cleddau, Dyfi, Mawddach, Dysynni, Conwy, Glaslyn Catch 5yr average 192 salmon and 1,644 sea trout

The Proposals • Two separate 12 week consultations 1. Net Limitation Order 1 st August – 24 th October, responses to WG 1. Catch Controls Byelaws 22 nd August – 14 th November, responses to NRW
Net Limitation Order • Restricts the number of nets. – no change to the number of licences – removed the 2 year ‘preference man’ qualification period for Tywi coracles and Teifi seine nets
Byelaws • All salmon to be returned • Season will end on 31 st July in all net fisheries – helping protect salmon in August • Season will start 1 st May, on the Tywi, Taf, Nevern, Teifi and Dyfi.
