Let’s spend our time on things that have a lasting impact . A sustainability mindset is vital from the very start.
What can be sustained? Suicide Prevention materials were shared with clubs and faculty, for student health fairs and club rush days.
Develop strategies to get campus and leadership buy-in Suicide prevention workshops continue for college for Public Safety Days .
Some Buy-in Strategies 1. See each SP activity as an opportunity to develop advocates. 2. Try to say YES to requests, and adapt as possible. 3. Collect feedback or mini evaluations as often as possible. 4. Share that feedback to show need and impact. 5. Use feedback to honor others and advance their work.
Strategies that Promote Sustainability Training campus partners can have a lasting impact Train-the-Trainer courses were completed by faculty.
Collect and Share Feedback
Use Mini-evaluations Good afternoon Chief, Please accept this sincere thank you for inviting me to North Campus Public Safety to provide a presentation on Suicide Prevention, Sept. 28. I was able to tailor the presentation to the area of prevention and protective resources for law enforcement and criminal justice. Summary of Feedback. There is a need for suicide prevention workshops . All of the attendees reported that they would recommend the presentation to others, describing the session as “informative,” “vital,” “amazing and interesting,” and noting that they “would recommend it to a friend.” It was suggested that we “speak about [this topic] more.” Participants were asked to provide an overall grade for the presentation. All of the feedback forms assigned a grade of A (or A+) to the session. Follow-up Materials Attached. In view of the focus on protective factors, follow-up information is attached to share with students . Thank you for supporting this important endeavor!
Build Community Partnerships Continue to cultivate partnerships and share resources Annual Best Practices in Suicide Prevention Conference 2017 Conference: http://www.nicklauschildrens.org/suicideprevention
Resource Development The funding climate is competitive but partnerships increase grant success. Example: MDC has worked with partners to obtain funds to offer Mental Health First Aid.
Continuing the Success The new Miami Dade College Office of Student Wellness - Builds on the GLS grant’s “grass roots” engagement and - Adds the “top down” strength of the Student Affairs District Office.
Resource Development and Funding Plan Partnership meeting can help to develop a sustainability plan.
Some funding ideas Consider a broader topic than SP, but add SP to the activities. Review SPRC newsletters, SAMHSA, and other funding sites Ask your grant’s department to do a funding search Look at community foundations, alumni groups, clubs and organizations Tell partners that your campus has the participants and the site Ask partners to write you into their grants, or to collaborate as partners Consider social media and other resource site.
Planning for new funds Develop a table of grants for possible applications that may provide funding Funding Body Name and Topics of interest of funding Commentary and Due Date and Funds URL body Personal Notes Knight Arts Challenge This program supports projects This is a popular program 05/02 http://knightfoundation.org/k about the arts that take place in that begins with a short pre- $15,000 to $1,000,000 night-arts-challenge/ or benefit South Florida. proposal. Project must include art.
Be Creative: Find a Way Be vocal. Communicate and share what you are doing. Develop mini-evaluations. Little summaries can go a long way. Build up others on campus. Let others shine. Be brave. Think outside the box. Be open to new possibilities. Welcome new partnerships. Show your passion for prevention.
