  15. THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE • It’s uncertain times for everyone and the current Pandemic poses a great risk to our health, our well being, our economy and our educations. • We understand these concerns and the distress it is causing and offer our support and sympathy to all those that need it. • Whilst we acknowledge that our health and that of each other is most important at this time, we have been thinking about our role as a higher education institution A recent Student Hut Whitepaper from March 2020 found that:

  16. OUR UNIVERSITY’S REPSONSE We want to help: our students, our industry, our partners, our hospitals, our communities – and you! • The School of Health and Society at Salford is one of the largest in the UK. We want to help the NHS and the general public • We have opened our doors to provide training to clinical staff who will be working in the new NHS Nightingale Hospital North West. • We have donated our PPE equipment to the NHS • We were involved in a local ‘United We Stream’ Entertainment event. Our own Digital Media Production Team provided the technical expertise. • Our Maker Space team have a prototype 90% sterilisable visor, with testing currently undertaken by Salford Royal (NHS), with the aim of using local commercial fabricators to produce 75 visors per day. • Before the first week of lockdown had begun, we also handed over a much-needed testing machine to armed forces personnel who transferred the kit to a company tasked by the government with upping the number of COVID-19 tests that can be carried out.

  17. OUR INDUSTRY’S REPSONSE • Our Professional body in this country, BAPO (British Association of Prosthetists & Orthotists), have recently produced and published some guidelines for Virtual Assessments • These guidelines allow us to remotely work with and treat certain users who rely on our expertise and our devices • Many of our colleagues not just in P&O but also the University have also been re-deployed and are being seconded on a voluntary basis to other roles to help the NHS during the crisis too.

  18. OUR PROGRAMME’S REPSONSE • We have converted our material for online and distance learning • We have converted assignments and examinations for use on digital software to allow students to continue allow them to progress and graduate • We are offering online revision and drop-in sessions for students to support them with their learning • We are using our online communication channels to support our students and to keep them updated • We are also working with industry partners and granting students access to online Webinars, to keep them engaged with our profession too. • We aim to be here and to welcome you, when it is safe to do so
