  3. PROGRESSION FROM YEAR 1 TO YEAR 2 AS, IB, vocational level 3: • Progression to year 2 is not automatic • Good attendance, academic progress and attitude to study • Successful completion of assessments • You will already know if there are concerns www.rutc.ac.uk

PROGRESSION FROM YEAR 1 TO YEAR 2 AS to A2: • AS exams take place 11 May to 5 June (orals and practicals earlier) • No study leave – classes continue until the last exam • A2 preparation/taster begins 8 June – students should attend all classes. Must achieve at least 3 E grades to be able to continue (maths has specific requirements) • Most students take 3 subjects at A2 • College does not offer any repeat/restart of the year (unless there are exceptional circumstances) www.rutc.ac.uk

PROGRESSION FROM YEAR 1 TO YEAR 2 Vocational L3: • Progression to Extended Diploma • Expectation to achieve all assessments and successfully complete year 1 qualification • Progression will need approval of Curriculum Manager IB: • Two year programme • End of year assessments/internal exams – results of these can go towards determining progression • Results of these go towards the predict final grades www.rutc.ac.uk

KEY DATES • Classes will continue until Friday 26 th June • AS results Thursday 13 August – sent by College e- mail to students • Enrolment for A2 level – Wednesday 19 th August • Enrolment for BTEC/IB – June/July – date TBC • Students will be reminded by letter and email • Students and parents will be advised if they will not be able to progress to year 2 www.rutc.ac.uk

Reasons for progressing to Higher Education include: • A real interest in the chosen subject • In order to attain qualifications needed for a particular profession or career • To gain more earning potential with a degree • The opportunity to include a work placement, or a period of study abroad • Personal satisfaction • Predicted grades will be AS results (unless teacher feels it can be raised) • Can apply for 2016 or defer to 2017 www.rutc.ac.uk

IMPORTANT DATES AND DEADLINES Tuesday 21 st April: Higher Education Fair September 2015: All students planning to go to university need to produce a draft of their personal statement the first week back in Sep. Friday September 25: College deadline for Medicine College deadline for Oxbridge Friday November 13: College deadline for UCAS applications (to guarantee applications will be sent off in time for UCAS deadline) * For any student who completes the whole application before the deadline, the tutor will send it off within two weeks (providing there is nothing to be amended) www.rutc.ac.uk

  17. THE COST OF HIGHER EDUCATION • Majority of courses cost £9000 per year • Financial support is available to help students meet the study and living costs through loans, grants, bursaries and scholarships • Most financial support is means tested www.rutc.ac.uk

Provide excellent opportunities for students of all levels Available at intermediate, advanced and higher level All training is Government and/or employer funded - NO FEES! Provide alternatives for students who may not be progressing to A2 (a lot now require a minimum of 5 GCSEs A-C including maths an English) www.rutc.ac.uk

Apprenticeships are JOBS, not placements or experience Not a poor alternative - highly sought after and competitive Available in traditional trades such as plumbing and hairdressing ALSO in most of the professions such as accountancy, engineering and Law (legal executive) Need to register on the Apprenticeship Website www.apprenticehips.gov.uk to search for vacancies The big organisations, e.g. BA, TFL, BT , start to advertise around Christmas taking applications for the following Autumn www.rutc.ac.uk

Higher Apprentice Sponsored Degree Programme After completing a Level 4 Diploma in IT, apprentices will have the opportunity to study an IT related sponsored degree. Entry Requirements: Ideally 7 GSCEs (C and above) PLUS 3 'A' levels, grades C or above, or their equivalent (eg a BTEC National Diploma). Higher Apprenticeships Cgi It Uk Ltd IT Apprentice Higher IT Apprenticeship At the end of the apprenticeship apprentices have the opportunity to gain a full BA (Hons) in either Business Management or IT with Business Management as part of a Sponsored Degree Programme. Entry requirements: A minimum of five A*-C GCSEs (or equivalent), including English and Maths PLUS 300 UCAS points across three A-Levels at grade C or above (or equivalent). www.rutc.ac.uk

  25. Case study from RUTC Amber – left RUTC last year with 4 A levels in physics, Spanish, maths, and music which she achieved with high grades. She successfully applied for an apprenticeship with the BBC on their Technology Apprenticeship scheme; they had over 1000 applicants for 20 places. As part of the three year Higher Apprenticeship programme, Amber will complete work placements with the BBC and other media companies, while studying towards a degree in Broadcast Engineering whilst being paid £11,500 annual salary. www.rutc.ac.uk
