Shubhi: First and foremost, THANK YOU. This convention wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of students like you. You are representatives of your schools, which is a amazing honor as well as a big responsibility. Today we are going to help you guys in being informed constituents and great leaders, so that we can narrow down our pool of candidates to the SMOB that best represents the interest of the students.

On the slide, the picture on the left hand side is from the 2018 October HCASC meeting at the Board of Education, the picture in the middle are all the seated student delegates from the 2018 Student Member of the Board of Education Convention, and the picture on the right is of the final voting video with the final two candidates. Each part of this timeline has its own responsibilities for convention candidates

Before the convention you are tasked with talking to your peers and school community about the different topics and issues that they feel are important and how that affects what they look for in a candidate. During the convention, you will need to listen carefully, ask questions that are reflective of concerns that you and you school community have, and make an informed decision at the end of the day. Once the convention is over, your job is not done. You will need to continue to act as delegates to the chosen SMOB for the duration of their term; this includes assisting the SMOB in gathering feedback, asking questions, and as always, acting as a beacon of communication between the SMOB and your school community.

  7. Responsibilities of the Student Member • Represent the slude11l ~\· perspective on the Board of Education! Ambika: The student member of the Board is an essential part of making student voice heard in Howard County. They are students, just like you, who are walking and living through some of the common challenges that all students face. Their responsibility is to voice the concerns of the student body on the material brought to the Board of Education. An effective student member will understand their limited voting rights, and the function of the board of education as a whole. In addition, they will constantly seek out to hear more about what the students what, and what they feel needs to be changed.

Student Member Responsibilities • U nders land the function of the Board of Education • Prepare for and participate in Board n1eetings and events Ambika: It is important that the candidates running to become the student member know their voting limitations. In addition, there schedule should allow for enough time to concentrate and prioritize being the Student Member. They should understand their responsibilities on the Board of Education, and know the function that it plays. In addition, prior to board meeting, board members are given material which they must review, understand, and gather feedback on in order to make an informed decision/ vote.

Student Member Responsibilities • Broadcas l Board issues lo IICPSS students al large • \Vork ,vilh the 1-IO\\ 'ard County r\ssociation of Student Councils (IICi\SC) to gather student feedback Ambika: Hcasc holds monthly meetings where students from all over the county are welcome to learn more about County issues, and how to be a good leader in their school. SMOB uses HCASC to keep connection with the student leaders and to receive feedback on policies and other concerns to understand the collective students perspective. In addition, you can check out more information about what she is doing by checking out her instagram @hocosmob.

A board member has minimal power in the decision the power is rested when the entire board comes together as a whole

Here is a list of some common responsibilities of the SMOB, and some issues the SMOB cannot control.

Remember, you are sent to the convention to determine which candidate you think will best represent your school at the board of education. You are not trying to find a candidate which aligns best with your ideas, rather one which aligns with the mission of your school and the ideas of your peers. In order to choose an effective leader, it is imperative to ask your peers what qualities they will look for in an effective student member and take this feedback to the day of the convention. You will learn more about this in the next few slides!

Shubhi: Now that you know how to be an effective leader and are informed about your duties, think about what you would personally look for in an effective student member. What are some issues you would like to have addressed, what kind of experience as a leader is most important for someone who will be representing you. Now, ask your peers the same question! Take this information to the convention to make an informed decision!
