Sports Psychology
• Sports Psychology is the study of the effects of variables, such as life stress, mood, and motivation, on sport performance and sport related injuries.
There can be many psychological problems with athletes, including: • Anxiety • Depression • Post traumatic response • Suicidal tendencies • Dealing with the death of an athlete
When an athlete is injured, he/she may go through many stages: • Denial • Anger • Bargaining • Depression • Acceptance
Relaxation in athletics: • Imagery, also known as visualization, is mental training or mental rehearsal. • Muscle relaxation originated in the early 1900’s by Dr. Edmund Jacobson. It consists of a series of muscle contractions and relaxations.
