Proposed Curriculum Highlights • Standards form the basis for each unit • Instructional shifts are addressed throughout the curriculum • Units developed using these key components of the Inquiry Design Model: • compelling & supporting questions • summative assessment (allows students to craft an evidence- based argument that answers the compelling question) • extending learning & engaging in civic action 6
Example Compelling Question : • Are human rights universal? Is equal always fair? Supporting Questions: • What is the difference between human needs, rights & privileges? • What factors of historical events have influenced society’s definition of human rights? • How do human rights vary among nations? • How do countries prioritize their need over global needs? Should they? 7
Learning & Collaboration During the 2016-2017 school year, the curriculum team worked with a content specialist from the Illinois State Board of Education to… • research, analyze & unpack the standards • learn about the instructional shifts necessary for implementation of the standards • create lessons that allowed teachers to experience inquiry 8
Learning & Collaboration 2017-2018 • Curriculum team engaged in ongoing professional development related to the Inquiry Design Model ◦ Learning based on the book Inquiry-Based Practice in Social Studies: Understanding the Inquiry Design Model ◦ High school department chairs modeled & shared best practices for inquiry ◦ Overview of standards & proposed curriculum presented at all middle schools 9
