  1. Good evening and welcome to 6 th grade. We would like to take this time to welcome you and your child to Lobit Middle School and the 6 th grade team. We’re sure you are as excited as we are about the upcoming year. It’s going to be great, and we’re looking forward to getting to know both you and your child. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.   2. We will have teacher webpages that will hold lots of good information. The links on the school page will start working on September 20th when our pages officially go live. Until then we all have our pages ready to view please use the following address to view the teacher pages until the links are active on the schools main page.

Arrival: • 7:15-7:45 Students will report to the cafeteria eat and/or wait until teacher picks their homeroom up 7:45 Students are released to homeroom 7:50 Pledges to the Flag and Morning Announcements 7:50 School begins. Students are tardy beginning at 7:51 • Dismissal: 3:15 Students are dismissed from school • Dress Code: Please reference the DISD dress code for students. Parents will receive phone calls from the front office staff if students are in violation of any part of this code. Parent Conferences will be scheduled by teachers soon. If you have • specific questions or concerns about your child’s progress, please email them to schedule a conference

  4. Hallway – Students are expected to walk quietly through the halls so other • classes can continue their learning without distractions. Cafeteria – Students sit with their homeroom classes and remain seated • until teacher dismisses them. RestRoom – Students are permitted to use the restroom as needed (except • for the first 15 minutes and last 10 minutes of class). Please be respectful and clean up after yourself. Remain quiet as to not distract others. Classroom – Students are expected to: • Follow directions Be Respectful to teachers and other students Come to class prepared with all need supplies Remain on task at all time Complete all assignments/homework

  5. Reading/Math: • Please encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes every night. Math prodigy assignments are posted weekly. Homework will be assigned as needed, and incomplete classwork will be assigned as homework. Projects: • ELA/SS- Most projects will be completed in class. Occasionally, work will be sent home to help the in-class project (research, unfinished work). Late Work: • Please encourage your child to turn in work on time. The first day it is late, 10 points are deducted. The 2 nd day, 20 points. If it Is 3 or more days late, they loss 30 points. At that point the highest grade achievable is a 70 with everything correct.

  6. Throughout the year we will be studying various genres of reading. We will cover many areas within each genre: • Text structure and features • Author’s purpose • Theme • Character traits • Main idea • Summary • Point of view

  7. Through out the year we will be reviewing what we learned in word study in previous years and building on that knowledge. This will help in our reading and writing skills. • High Frequency Words • Forming plurals • Prefixes/Suffixes • Contractions • Synonyms/Antonyms • Irregular nouns/verbs • Greek and Latin roots • Grammar and Conventions • Using vocabulary to show meaning

  8. This year we will be focusing on several forms of essay writing and the writing process. Within these essays we will be working on adding: • Figurative language • Leads and Conclusions • Word choice • Ba-da-bing (colorful language) • Sensory details • Strong Thesis Statements Concluding Statements

  9. This year we will be focusing on World Cultures. Within World Cultures, we will cover many topics: • Geography • Government • Economics • Cultural Traits of various countries • Historical Events • Current Events • Important People of various countries

  10. Students will use many skills they have learned in 3 rd , 4 th and 5 th grade. There will be daily instruction that incorporates review of these TEKs in addition to 6 th grade content. It is important for students to: • Gradually build a strong grasp of fractions, decimals, place value, operations and multiplication of rational numbers as we move throughout the year. • Students will learn how to apply their own problem solving process to word problems and real life situations. • All classes will have Unit Tests and checkpoints. Students will be able to practice skills on math prodigy. • Major tests will have test reviews on math prodigy. ***Math prodigy is a program used to help students with very individualized instruction. Every account is different based on their abilities and knowledge of math. Every account differentiates for the student using it.

  11. We will cover a variety of topics in life science, chemistry, Earth and Space, as well as force, motion, and energy. I make sure I vary activities throughout the year to meet the learning styles of all students. We will have labs, notes, hands-on learning, videos, technology lessons and occasional guest speakers. 1st nine weeks: • Science procedures • Classification • Levels of organisms-Ecosystems 2 nd nine weeks: • Elements/compounds • Change in Matter • Metals, non-metals & Metalloids 3 rd nine weeks: • Structures of the Earth • Rock Cycle • Plate Tectonics • Space 4 th nine weeks: • Potential/Kinetic • Motion • Energy Transformations • Simple Machines
