SOLAR CASE STUDY OHIO NORTHERN UNIVERSITY ADA, OH Construction of a 2MW field solar array that supplies electricity to Ohio Northern University began in September 2016. GEM Energy secured the project financing under a negotiated Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) structure, and designed, constructed, and will continue to operate and maintain the solar array. Under the 25-year PPA, ONU will benefit with a no-out-of-pocket solution where no university capital is required for the array’s construction and ongoing maintenance. The commissioning of the system was done in early 2017 and the array is now fully functional. Project specifics include: • Over 18,000 thin-film panels from First Solar were used. The array includes a single-axis tracker that moves panels • to follow the sun, allowing maximum solar harvest. • The solar field generates approximately 10 percent of ONU’s annual electricity needs – an emissions reduction of 2,202 tons, equal to 215 average households. ONU will include the solar array in its renewable energy • curriculum. The new program will be led by GEM Energy and will include pilot student teams. 6842 COMMODORE DRIVE | WALBRIDGE, OHIO 43465 | PHONE: 866.720.2700
TWINSBURG, OHIO WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT COMBINED HEAT & POWER SYSTEM GEM Energy listened to the issues that we encountered on the unit’s startup and worked collaboratively with us on resolving the issues to obtain optimum performance of our unit and its gas conditioning system. JOHN ADAMS (LEFT), WASTEWATER SUPERVISOR | CHRIS CAMPBELL, PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR TWINSBURG WASTEWATER TREATMENT FACILITY Twinsburg, Ohio, is a community that takes pride in the beauty of its natural environment and in its family-friendly atmosphere. So several years ago, when the city’s wastewater treatment plant was regularly fmaring methane gas from the plant’s waste digester into the atmosphere, city leaders sought out a viable alternative to burning ofg this byproduct of the treatment process. They found a solution with a combined heat and power (CHP) system, which captures the methane and uses it to fuel a Capstone C65 MicroTurbine, generating electricity for the plant’s consumption. This CHP, or co-generation system, not only produces 65kW of electricity, it also uses heat from the micro turbine exhaust to heat the digester, increasing its efgiciency. In addition to demonstrating environmental stewardship, the implementation is helping to keep energy spending in check at the Twinsburg facility, which has a processing capacity of 5.8 million gallons per day. Since implementing a CHP system, the plant has saved approximately $4,300 per month on its electricity and natural gas costs.
