Messages to Prosecutors: When You Contact a Georgia AAA . . . • We will not investigate whether abuse/exploitation occurred • We will connect victims/survivors and care partners to services and supports to address risk factors for abuse/exploitation: • Isolation: in-home supports or social engagement • Neglect: access to (and coordination of) services • Legal problems: • legal action against financial exploiter • authorize a trusted decision-maker • Caregiver stress: • caregiver supports (e.g., respite, care consultations, Powerful Tools for Caregivers education) • information for “financial caregivers” • AAAs provide these services directly or . . . • fund service providers/trusted partners in our region • connect to other publicly-funded or private-pay services
Examples of AAA initiatives related to elder abuse/financial exploitation • Elder abuse prevention • Public education and outreach: elder abuse prevention/reporting • Partnering with law enforcement and prosecutors • Multidisciplinary Teams (MDTs) • Participation in MDTs to help connect abuse survivors to social services • Advocacy for state and local MDT development • AAA representative housed in prosecutors’ office • Seattle/King County • Immediate access to services for adult protective services (APS) substantiated abuse cases • Georgia pilot (Victims of Crime Act funding)
Ideas for working with GA AAAs . . . • Refer older adults, individuals with disabilities, their families and caregivers to the ADRC • Add ADRC contact information to your websites or other publicity • Include AAAs on your MDTs • Develop an MOU so we can work together on cases • Ask your AAA if they have an Elder Rights Council • Ask to join! • Example: CSRA (Augusta) is part of CAVE and has an active Taking Elder Abuse Seriously (TEAS) Team. • Consider ways we can train your colleagues – invite us to present! • Thanks, PAC!
