SCS High School English Plan Leveraging Aligned Instructional Materials to Impact Student Achievement Office of Academics
The quality of instructional materials in our classrooms has a large impact on student learning. “There is strong evidence that the choice of instructional materials has large effects on student learning – effects that rival in size those that are associated with differences in teacher effectiveness.” Chingos & Whitehurst, Choosing Blindly: Instructional Materials, Teacher Effectiveness, and the Common Core

Maintaining Growth Requires Continued Investment Over the last two school years, we have made strategic decisions that have positively impacted high school literacy: • Extensive revisions to the district curriculum maps • Providing high-quality, standards-aligned instruction in grades 6-8, allowing students to enter high school with knowledge and strategies not seen before. To provide equity for high school literacy teachers, we want to continue to provide the same level of support with instructional materials for 9-12 that we are providing for 6-8. 4
