Jack Petchey Schools’ Table Tennis Donation Scheme • In 2011 ETTA invited to apply for funding to place TT equipment in London & Essex schools • Jack Petchey Foundation aims: • inspire and raise the aspirations of young people • affirm, reward and celebrate achievement • Targeting 11 to 25 year olds in London & Essex • £184,000 worth of equipment has gone into 163 schools, 395 indoor tables and 137 outdoor tables 3
Jack Petchey – Table Tennis Competitions • Team Competition – held in 5 London CSP areas in Nov – leading to the Jack Petchey London Schools’ Team Finals in January • Individual Competition – held in 5 London CSP areas in Jan – leading to the Jack Petchey London Schools’ Individual Finals in June • ESTTA – Competitions are also the qualifying events for the English Schools’ National Team and Individual Championships 4

Why is Table Tennis so popular? • It is good fun • It can be played almost anywhere and is space effective • It is independent of weather conditions and seasons • It can be played by all age groups • It is suitable for players of all standards and all abilities – including wheelchair, standing and learning disabilities 7
Why is Table Tennis a good school sport? • It is equally popular for both boys and girls • It needs a minimum of personal equipment • It can be played at many levels; competitive and non- competitive – curricular and extra curricular • It is physically and mentally invigorating 8

Ways in which to maximise the use of equipment already in school School PE benches with small cardboard ‘nets’ are ideal for practising backhand push strokes and the development of directional play . Plastic topped school tables again with a cardboard ‘net’ are ideal for both backhand and forehand touch play exercises. 16

Questions and Answers A Table Tennis League! Q. Can a team be of any size? A. Yes – preferably 2, 3 or 4 players Q. Is there a fixed number of teams in a league? A. No – 6 to 8 teams is a good number but it can be more or less. Q. Is there a fixed age group throughout the country for the Butterfly Schools’ League? A. No – school events are often organised at Under 16, Under 13 or Under 11 – but you can chose the most suitable age group to meet your needs. 23
Questions and Answers Q. Can boys and girls be in the same team? A. Yes – if it helps to form a league, but a mixed team often tends to be mostly, or all, boys. It’s good to have a separate girls’ league. Q. Do schools who play in the league automatically qualify for the ESTTA Team Competitions? A. No – the leagues are stand alone events in their own right. Q. Can a school enter the County round of the ESTTA Team event who do not take part in the league? A. Yes. 24
