Why produce Travel Plans Why produce Travel Plans •Reduce traffic congestion around schools • Improve road safety for children • Encourage w alking and cycling • Contribute to children’s healthy lifestyles through increased exercise • Reduce pollution from traffic around schools
Schools are required to: Schools are required to: • Carry out a travel survey amongst pupils and staff • Set up a steering group w ith eg. governor, member of staff, parent, pupils • Set targets for increases in w alking and cycling • Formulate an action plan show ing how they intend to reach targets • Submit Travel Plan for approval by Transport for London • Monitor Travel Plan annually • Re-w rite and resubmit their Travel Plan every three years.
Capital Grant Funding for Schools Approval of the plan releases a one-off capital grant payment for each school to be spent on access or on-site improvements. A typical primary will receive around £5000, with a secondary receiving around £10,000. Can be spent on a range of schemes including: • Cycle parking • CCTV • Guardrails • Security gates • Parent shelters • Trees • Entrance Re-engineering
Additional funding has been obtained from TfL to facilitate school travel planning, including: • Publicity material • Annual conference for schools • Termly new sletter • Theatre in Education • Teacher cover for developing plans • On and off-site additional engineering w ork for w hich schools can bid • A variety of cycling initiatives • At least one larger scale engineering project each year to increase safety on the route to school.
The role of the Road Safety Team – School Travel School Travel Advisor – help and assistance throughout the process. Provides a number of resources – • sample surveys and a survey analysis and reporting service • maps and data, • promotional material, support/funding for events etc • consultancy for schools, ensuring they reach DfES/DfT criteria Schools are encouraged to use the web site: www.hounslowstp.org
The role of the Road Safety Team - Walking Walk to School projects: • Walk on Wednesday or ‘WOW’ • Debra the Zebra! Pedestrian Training: • ‘Safer Steps’ roadside training with parent volunteers • In class ‘street scene’ training
The role of the Road Safety Team - Cycling • Level 1 – off-road, playground based cycle training – year 5 • Level 2 – on-road practical cycle training – years 6 & 7 plus holiday courses • UPP+ - Further cycling activities such as Cycle Trains • Cyclicious – a cycling programme for secondary school girls • Try and Ride – a cycle loan scheme for primary & secondary schools • Bike Clubs – as part of Extended Schools scheme
Cycling cont. Family cycle ride – Grand Union Canal, Brentford Bike Train – Cranford Junior.
Motorcycle training
The role of the Road Safety Team – Other Projects • Junior Road Safety Officer Scheme – volunteer pupils in primary schools running programs relating to road safety and travel awareness throughout the year. • TW4 Project – working with Somali families • Asian Elders Project – walking groups for older people in partnership with Health Promotion Team • Road Safety Forum – information sharing and events with other stakeholders, including Met Police, fire service, ambulance service etc.
Central Hounslow Schools Recent work has included : • Cycle parking shelter installed at Lampton and Hounslow Town Schools. • Bike Clubs at Beavers Community and St. Mark’s RC schools. Beavers and Hounslow Heath Schools have also run ‘bike trains’. • Suffah Primary School is developing a Travel Plan and has taken part in cycle training.
TW4 Project with Somali Families • There is a disproportionate number of casualties amongst children in this community. • TW4 project works with families of young children and runs motor cycle training for teenage boys. • We have successfully bid to TfL for funding in 2009/10 to extend this project in the borough.
Parking outside schools • Audit has taken place of ‘school keep clear’ markings outside schools • Schools have been invited to opt for ‘all day’ or ‘morning and afternoon’ parking restrictions. • Traffic orders now in place and information plates ordered • Enforcement by camera to begin October 2008.
