  3. 3/12/14 ¡ The Criminal Justice System is the single largest SBIRT - Concept and Design referring source to substance abuse treatment ¨ SBIRT uses a public health approach to universal screening for substance use problems. ¨ SBIRT provides: ¤ Immediate rule out of non problem users; ¤ Identification of levels of risk; ¤ Identification of patients who would benefit from brief advise; ¤ Identification of patients who would benefit from higher level of care, and; ¤ Progressive levels of clinical interventions based on need True or False ?   5. 3/12/14 ¡ Court Programs Common Charges Operate in two Diversion Programs: ¨ Retail theft ¨ Theft ¨ MDPP - Misdemeanor Deferred Prosecution Program ¨ Burglary ¨ Possession of a stolen vehicle ¨ DPP - Deferred Prosecution Program ¨ Identity Theft Goals of SBIRT in CJ System Advantages ¨ Screening quickly assesses the severity of substance use ¨ To provide effective early intervention to defendants and identifies the appropriate level of treatment ¨ To link people to treatment services based on individual ¨ Brief intervention focuses on increasing insight and need(s). awareness regarding substance use and motivation toward behavior change ¨ To educate the criminal justice system on the prevalence of drug use/abuse/addiction within the courts. ¨ Referrals to treatment provides those identified as needing more treatment with access to specialty care. ¨ To assist Illinois in preparation for health care reform.
