  15. Standard vs. Foundation Subject Foundation subjects put focus on mastery of  core content and skills. These are pitched at a lower level as  compared to the corresponding standard subject. 19

  16. Rationale and Intent Providing our weaker Students a  differentiated curriculum that would best maximize their potential. These Students may have particular strengths,  and we should develop them as much as possible by offering them specific subjects at a higher (standard) level of study. 20

  17. Guidelines for Subject Combinations Pass 3 or more subjects at P4  offer 4  subjects at the standard level at P5 Pass 2 or less subjects at P4  may offer  foundation subjects 21

  18. Mother Tongue Languages at P5 MT vs. Higher MT (HMT) 22

  21. Higher Mother Tongue Languages (HMT) at P5  Extra 1 hr/week taught outside curriculum time.  Students will sit for both MTL & HMTL papers.  School will recommend Students who are able to cope with HMTL at the end of the year. 25

  22. Higher Mother Tongue Languages (HMT) at P5  Option to take HMTL at P5 is given only once at the end-of-year at P4  Subsequent movement at end of P5 for P6 will be based solely on your child’s performance and the school’s decision .  Results for HMT will NOT be used for calculation of the PSLE aggregate score.  ONLY the MT grades (i.e. CL/ML/TL) will be used for the calculation of the PSLE aggregate score. 26

  23. HMT  Even if Students did not talk HMT at Pri Schools, they can still opt to offer HMT at Sec schools if they are in the  Top 10% of the PSLE cohort; or  Top 11% — 30% of the PSLE cohort and meet the language criteria i.e. an A* grade in the MTL or at least a Merit in HMTL. 27

  24. MT or HMT? 1. Consider your child’s interest and ability • Is the child performing very well in the language? • Does your child enjoy the language? • How is the child’s performance in other subjects? • Time management (weekly additional lessons in the afternoon, other remedial/enrichment/ supplementary lessons for other subjects, CCAs) 28

  25. MT or HMT? 2. Demands of HMT - Emphasis on strong language competency - Course expectations are raised substantially as compared to P4 3.Secondary School Option - Do you intend to let your child apply to a SAP schools after PSLE? 29

  26. Bonus points for taking HMT ONLY applicable if your child is in the Top 30% of the PSLE cohort and is going to a SAP secondary school.  Distinction – 3 points  Merit – 2 points  Pass – 1 point 30

  29. How Subject-Based Banding Works?  P4 Overall examination results i.e. SA1 (30%) + SA2 (70%)  Based on the Student’s P4 Overall examination results, the school recommends a subject combination to parents / guardians 33

  30. Higher Mother Tongue Languages (HMT) at P5  Students who opt-in for HMTL e.g. Higher Chinese Language (HCL) will be placed in the original class allocated to them based on their performance in all 4 subjects.  They will be pulled- out from various class to form a HCL class during HCL lesson. (see next slide for illustration) 34

  31. For Opt-In (HCL) Students during MT lessons Class 1 HCL Class Class 2 Opt-in Students Class 3 Students who opted for Class 4 HCL will be pulled-out from their original class Opt-in Students during MT lessons to Class 5 form a separate HCL class. Opt-in Students 35
