  2. MHUC Goals • To provide immediate relief to people in distress • To help them maintain stability in their lives • To avoid involuntary psychiatric hospitalization, psychiatric emergency room visits and incarceration

  3. MHUC Program Description . A walk-in outpatient clinic for SCC residents with a mental health crisis needing help . Voluntary services, i.e., need to sign consent for services . People with medical emergency must go to Emergency Room . Services include screening, assessment, crisis intervention, referrals and short-term treatment, including medications

  4. MHUC Program Description (cont’d) • Psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis and treatment • Brief medication management services (up to 60 days) • Recently, Level I referral intakes (EPS / psychiatric hospital discharges) • Appropriate referral / information to other community resources

  5. MHUC Staffing • Psychiatrists • Licensed clinical social workers • Marriage family therapists • Licensed psychiatric technicians • Nurse assistants • Health service representatives

MHUC Staffing (cont’d) • Law Enforcement Liaisons (LEL) - Provide Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) to law enforcement - Facilitate mutual understanding and cooperation between mental health providers and local law enforcement workforces, e.g., outreach meeting and education - Assist MH staff and law enforcement with 5150 crisis intervention in community / home setting

MHUC Staffing (cont’d) • LEL’s have trained Law Enforcement in Interactive Video Simulation Training (IVST) • Total classes trained ‘14 – 84 • SJPD – 60 classes from May ‘14 – Sept. ’14 • CSU – 14 classes • CIT – 5 classes • Other (San Mateo Co. Sherriff, Cal Trans, DA Investigators – 5 classes

  8. MHUC Staffing (cont’d) • Asked by San Mateo Co. MH/Police CIT to present IVST at the Ca. CIT conference Jan. ’14 • Future Plans • Continue training with DA’s Office, Sheriff’s, Los Gatos PD, Santa Clara PD • Other interested agencies in IVST training: Contra Costa Co CIT, Placer Co CIT, Napa Co CIT, CSU system for future trainings.
