  2. A SUSTAINABILITY WORKING GROUP Aimed at identifying collaborative campus-based solutions across academics, operations, research, and campus life  The prioritization of initial working groups was informed by three bodies of work:  The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating  System (STARS); SIU’s most recent report The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals  Drawdown.org  First 5 Working Groups:  AIR & CLIMATE  ENERGY  FOOD  TRANSPORTATION  WATER  Sign up at sustainability.siu.edu  2

  3. SALUKI ENERGY FORUMS  Goal: To provide people with information so they can G E T I N V O L V E D  Topics: Clean Energy, Climate Change, Campus Activities, Community Groups, Campus Energy Use, Project Drawdown, Energy Research and Education at SIU Now and in the Future  Read about Saluki Energy Forums on energy.siu.edu 3

  4. GREEN OFFICE SLEUTHS  A joint project of the Advanced Coal and Energy Research Center and the Sustainability Office  Run by Student SLEUTHS ( S tudent- L ed E nergy U se T reasure H unts)  Working with offices around campus to develop customized Green Office Plans  Finding ways to overcome the unique challenges of reducing energy use on the Carbondale campus  Offices can sign up on energy.siu.edu or sustainability.siu.edu 4

  5. SALUKI LIGHTS OUT At U of I in Champaign “Lights Out”: 97,576 Lights turned off • 119 Tons of carbon dioxide • equivalent saved $14,636 saved in energy bills • LET’S DO THIS SALUKIS! Learn more on energy.siu.edu or sustainability.siu.edu’s Earth Month Calendar. 5

  6. ENERGY RESEARCH SURVEY  Saluki Energy Focus Group works on a CAMPUS level, but we want to have impact GLOBALLY:  Understanding our strengths: the expertise of our faculty, how it can be applied to our local environment  Uncovering new opportunities: Under-explored areas of research and potential new areas of research and collaboration  Applying these new insights to research, education, partnerships and planning  Growing and sharing this new knowledge  Faculty: Please participate at energy.siu.edu. 6

ENERGY-RELATED RESEARCH @ SIU – PAST AND CURRENT Bioeconomy Coal utilization   Fuel cells Ecosystem  Rare earth elements  services Electric/hybrid vehicles Biofuels   Reclamation  Human behavior  Embedded systems  Biomass energy  Sensors/biosensors  Hydrogen  Energy economics  Carbon dioxide  Smart grid  Magnetic refrigeration  separation Energy efficiency  Social media and Materials for energy   Carbon dioxide utilization Energy in computing and   systems energy networking Carbon mitigation  Mitigation planning Solar panel materials   Energy policy  Climate change  Nanotechnology  Transportation  Energy storage  Coal and biomass  Photovoltaics  Vibration energy Energy Transitions   liquefaction Power systems  Environmental impacts of Waste to energy   Coal extraction  energy Public health  7

  8. ENERGY RESEARCH SURVEY  Faculty: mass email will go out about the survey next week, so please keep an eye out. 9

  9. COMING SOON: NET -ZERO SALUKIS  Goals:  1) Helping new and existing facilities (buildings, offices, etc.) to determine energy efficiency measures (equipment, mechanics, etc.) to minimize emissions from electricity, heating and cooling, then  2) Offsetting remaining emissions with campus projects  SIU Carbondale Campus becomes a living laboratory 10

  10. SALUKI GREEN ACTION TEAM (SGAT)  A Sustainability Office program supported by SEFG  A weekly educational email is sent to group members including students faculty and staff  Emails include tips on simple actions to reduce water and energy usage and on developing positive habits.  The next Meetup is April 24 at the Sustainability Hub – interactive activities to learn about sustainability  Now: Join the Drawdown EcoChallenge  Visit sustainability.siu.edu for more information. 11

  11. PLEASE GET INVOLVED NOW You can help SIU’s next generation make the world a better place.  Saluki Energy Focus Group – a Sustainability Working Group  Saluki Energy Forums  Green Office SLEUTHs  Saluki Lights Out  Energy Research Survey  Net-Zero Salukis  Saluki Green Action T eam  More coming soon  Visit energy.siu.edu for more information!
