Focus Group Planning The purpose of the Focus Group is to collaborate as stakeholders to give input and recommendations to establish, revise and communicate clear, consistent and cohesive behavioral standards across campus. We do this building on a culture of open communication, feedback and conflict resolution.

Action Plan: Areas of Focus
I. Behavioral Interventions and Structures Finalize Behavioral Intervention Matrix Draft and Finalize Progressive Discipline Chart (consequences) Finalize Essential Student Behavioral Expectations Establish Supervised Work/Study room Investigate Lunch Community Service, Saturday school options Institute “No Bully” program (training on 8/16)
II. Communicating Clear, Consistent Behavior Standards Review expectations/consequences with students the 1st week of school. ● Require parent & student signatures on expectations for student conduct. ● ● Solicit ongoing parent & student feedback on these expectations & hold periodic PTA sponsored parent/staff “listening sessions” on school issues. Publicize which individual(s) are contacts for different types of issues. ● Clarify communication process to teachers and parents about student ● interventions. ● Revisit expectations frequently (e.g. 2x/trimester) as a faculty w/Focus Group participation. ●
III. Positive Strategies for School Culture Begin school year with a positive community building activities ● ○ Grade level gatherings Speaker ○ ● Increase clubs and activities at lunch ● Include ideas from students and parent volunteers Expand Mindfulness practices beyond 6th grade Core classes ●
IV. Pressure Points
a. Cell Phones ● Cell phones are to be turned off and put away in BACKPACKS, bell to bell. ● Violations result in phone confiscation and retrieval by parent. ● 2nd incident warrants a parent meeting.
b. Campus Boundaries ● Reinforce existing campus boundary map ● Inform students on boundaries/lunch expectations/lunch line protocol ● Staff visible during passing periods ● Revisit success of model in October 2016
c. Backpacks ● Research mobile lockers and/or hooks for recess/lunch. ● Specify where to put backpacks at lunch and recess. ● Consider alternative storage location for students’ non- school items (e.g., club sports equipment)
V. Effective Learning Environments ● Faculty-wide classroom management training ● No Bully training & year long support ● Coaching & Teacher Peer Observation ● Structured Grade Level meetings for student intervention and support ● Lower class size in Math 8 ● Increased recess and lunch supervision (5/31/16)
VI. Parent Involvement ● Plan for parent support in Office, Library, Recess/Lunch ● Teachers request parent volunteers at Back to School Night ● Parent-run clubs and lunchtime activities (e.g., intramural support) ● Weekly communication through Bulletin on opportunities to get involved

Monitoring for Continuous Improvement Survey students, staff, and parents each trimester to assess key areas of ● campus climate and student conduct ● Review student conduct data each trimester - referrals, detentions, suspensions, etc. Review progress at bi-monthly Faculty, Lead Team and Site Council ● meetings ● Board report in late Fall 2016 to update progress
