Goal of the Bilingual Career Exploration Day: An opportunity to promote work, volunteer and educational programs to high school students. A chance to inspire soon-to-be graduates and share personal experiences enhanced by bilingualism.
• Event started in 2006. • CPF Nova Scotia has seen over 5,000 students participate. • Dartmouth, Halifax, Sydney, Antigonish and the Annapolis Valley. • Ten career days to date.
Free to students and schools Exhibitors pay a fee to cover the cost of facilities rental, program and promotional items Prize draw items donated by exhibitors.
Originally for students from grade 7-12 Feedback from teachers: “Great event to expose students in grade 7 -9 as they need an introduction to possible career paths.” “Great event to expose students in grade 10 -12 as they change their minds frequently about their career paths.”
Bilingual Career Exploration Day Passport • Great tool to encourage students to interact with exhibitors. • Teachers request the passport in advance to use in conjunction with the curriculum. • Teachers assign students an exhibitor to research or use as the basis for a career research project.
Educational Resources/Hands On Area • Students used resume templates to write up their resume and post it. • Students filled out questionnaires to discover what colour they were and how it related to career paths. • Students completed puzzles on career paths. • Students did a mock interview with a volunteer.

Students too focused on filling out the passports • Exhibitors wanted to talk with grades 10-12 where they felt that • they would make the most impact.
Speed ed Dating ing Format • Small groups of students sit at exhibitor’s table. • Exhibitors have 5 minutes approximately to make a pitch to the students. • Bell rings and students move to next exhibitor. • Students usually given the choice to meet with any exhibitor for the last 10 minutes of the hour. • Bilingual Career Exploration Day focused on grades 10-12.
Code e of Conduct duct To ensure that the Biling ingual l Career Exploratio oration Day (BCED) ) runs smoothly, all visitors are required to comply with the following Code of Conduct ct. All participating schools must arrive close to the start time of their session. • Each exhibit will have a bilingual adult in attendance for the duration of each • session and students are encouraged to communicate in French. Transportation to and from the BCED is the responsibility of the school. • Any damages to the tables, table dressings or location caused by a student • will be the responsibility of the student’s school. Teachers are responsible for the safety of their students. • CPF Nova Scotia will not be responsible for any lost, stolen or damaged • items. CPF Nova Scotia reserves the right to ask a student to leave the BCED if that • student’s behavior is deemed inappropriate, aggressive or illegal.

• Next Career Day will be held February 22, 2019 at Saint Mary’s University. • Students in French Immersion, French First Language and IB program in grades 10-12.
Bilingual Career Exploration Day 2.0 In 2018: Students had the opportunity to take Language Tasters, 30 minute • introductions to other languages. Workshop that focused on language and technology. • Students had two workshop sessions and more choices of • workshops. In 2019: Ask exhibitors to submit their own resumes, so that students could • use them as resource tools.
Key Points for your Career Fair Event: Set out the goal of your event. Decide on the age group that you want to target. Create a format for the event, but retool it every couple of years. Choose a school bus friendly location. Begin planning your event approx. 6 months in advance.
Key points for Recruiting Exhibitors: • Send out invites to event early with plenty of information for exhibitors. • Contact people to see if they have bilingual person on staff to represent an organization. • Keep knocking on doors and calling people! • Every bilingual person is a potential presenter ☺ • Always carry a business card and chat up your event. • Collect business cards during the year to create a bank of potential exhibitors.
