How I got into STEM * Broke school computers. * Made awful software. * Became convinced I could learn what I needed to learn to make computers do what I wanted. * Intensive learning through experience (Stayz)
Everyone I know tells the same story
What I see in good software engineers * A dedication to ongoing self education. * Deep interest in technology outside of work. * A desire to hold themselves to the highest standards. * An ability to talk about past experiences and/or goals.
What I say about good software engineers * They have a great attitude and approach to work. * All of my best ideas come from them. * They share our vision. * I can’t believe how lucky we are to have someone so dedicated to their work.
Junior software engineers * Very little experience. * Attitude to learning, ability to be mentored and a desire to work like the best are the biggest factors towards success. * They will earn a lot of money.
Why I’m excited about tech in NSW * Large amount of venture capital available. * Government support, community enthusiasm. * Sophisticated customers and corporate overlords who want to help. * The leverage that modern web technology gives you.
What I would do to help STEM students * Develop their ability to learn how to learn. * Help them fi nd a balance between asking for help and fi guring stuff out for themselves. * Don’t worry if you don’t know the tech side, fi nd something they are passionate about and they’ll fi gure out the details.
