Sterilising by boiling
Making up a powdered formula feed safely. • Fill the kettle with fresh tap water – don’t use water that has been previously boiled • Boil the water. Leave the water to cool to for no longer than 30 minutes to ensure that the water temperature remains at 70 degrees • Clean and disinfect the work surface • Wash hands thoroughly • If using s cold water steriliser, shake off excess solution or rinse the equipment using the cooled boiled water from the kettle. • Stand the bottle on a cleaned work surface. • Avoid putting teats & caps on work surfaces
• Always put the water in the bottle first while it is hot before adding the powdered infant formula • Loosely fill the scoop with formula. Level it off using the edge of a clean dry knife or the leveller provided • Holding the edge of the teat put it on the bottle • Cover the teat with the cap and shake until the powder has dissolved • Cool the formula by holding the bottom half of the bottle under cold running water or placing the bottle in a bowl. • Make sure the water does not touch the cap covering the teat. • Test the temperature of the formula on the inside of your wrist .
Points to consider in preparation for stage 3 • Share information on the safe preparation of a feed with all mothers even if they have previously bottle fed (don’t assume anything) • Ask what type of formula is being used? • Ask how are they sterilising equipment? • Share leaflets: Guide to bottle feeding Start4life and Simple formula guide (UNICEF/First Steps Nutrition) • REMEMBER RESPONSIVE BOTTLE FEEDING (formula & EBM) • Keep baby close • Encourage rooting • Allow baby to take teat • Pace feed • Never force a full feed • Limit the number of people offering the feed.
