  6. Basic Guidelines to Course Choice • S5 - choose an appropriate number of subjects at Higher, National 4 or National 5 level • S6 – choose a number of subjects (Advanced Higher, Higher, National 5 or National 4 level) based on a points system

  7. Coursing in S5 • S5 students are expected to be ‘fully coursed’ • Some students may wish to study 5 Highers • Other students may prefer a combination of Highers and National Qualifications • This will include 1 period of PSE and 1 period of core

  8. Coursing in S6 • The study time which sixth year students are given within the timetable allows them to take a measure of responsibility for their own work. • All S6 students must take a course of study with a minimum tariff of 12 points. (Broadly speaking this equates to 4 column choices)

  9. S6 Points system • Choose courses from 5 option columns, totalling at least 12 points • Advanced Higher 4 points • Higher 3 points • National 4 or 5 3 points • Academies 3 points • Other Certificate Courses 3 points

  10. Short National Courses • Short courses are 3 periods per week. • These are available at National 3, 4 and 5 level • Students can study a National Qualification as a short course if they have previous experience in S1 – S4 • Teachers will recommend to students if short courses are an option for them.

  11. Long National Courses • Long courses are 6 periods per week • These are offered as National 3, 4 and 5 • These are open to all students regardless of their previous experience in the subject

Advanced Highers • Advanced Higher courses are listed on the course choice sheet, but are not in a column. • There is potential at Dunbar Grammar to offer Advanced Highers in • Art and Design, Biology, Business Education, Chemistry, Computing, Drama, English, French, Geography, German, Graphic Communication, Health and Food Technology, History, Maths, Modern Studies, Music, RMPS, Physics and PE. • The decisions as to whether an Advanced Higher course will run and the periods allocated to it are dependent on numbers of students taking the subject.

  17. The selection process – what to do • Read the course information booklet carefully and ask your Guidance teacher any questions. (available from 6 th February) • Likely Levels of Next Study will be issued the Monitoring and Tracking reports on 6 th February • Discuss options at the S4 parents/carers consultation evening on 8 th February or the S5 parents/carers consultation evening on 20 th February • Parents/carers attend coursing interview 28 th February – 2 nd March (Invitation letter will be issued next Monday – 1 week turnaround for return)

Travel column • In order to accommodate courses from other establishments and minimise the impact on the rest of the students timetable, column 2 will be our dedicated ‘travel’ column. • All school college partnerships, academies and foundation apprenticeships will run on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon (periods 5, 6 and 7).

Foundation Apprenticeships • Undertaking a foundation apprenticeship means you will spend time away from school, at college and with an employer getting real, practical work experience. • It’s a good opportunity to try out a possible career and you can progress into work, onto a Modern Apprenticeship, a graduate level apprenticeship, or other courses at college or university.

Open University courses • Young Applicants in Schools Scheme (YASS) • Gives S6 students in Scotland the opportunity to study a range of Open University modules within school. • Designed to bridge the gap between school and university, college or employment. • Now includes some courses on ‘Law in Scotland’.

  25. South East Scotland Academies Programme • In partnership between QMU and EC there are three academies available to pupils in S5 and S6: • Creative Industries Academy • Engineering Academy • Health and Social Care Academy • Hospitality and Tourism Academy • 1 year course.
