Revision of Monitoring Guidelines (Hydrography and Hydrochemistry)
The review process Drafts composed and reviewed by a group composed of national contacts from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Poland (Co-Lead) and Sweden (Lead) Feedback recieved from S & C 4-2016 Comments recieved after S & C 4-2016 Continued work within the group, with assistance from external experts Drafts for new topics presented to sharepoint site – latest documents were considered to need further review.
General changes to guidelines Reference to quality management system according to EN ISO/IEC 17025, instead of a description of a quality management system Laboratories must be able to provide verification of performance (CRMs, interlaboratory comparisons, proficiency testings)
Guidelines for determination of nutrients General remarks Minor changes, update on QA/QC Immediate analysis is preferable to storage in freezer Determination of ammonium A method for determination based on fluorescence listed as an alternative to indophenol method Determination of silicate Included, although only inorganic nitrogen and inorganic phosphorus are listed as core indicators
Guidelines for physical oceanography Content edited to fit template better (after feedback from S & C 4-2016) Overlapping with upcoming guidelines for autonomous devices? Could (should?) be splitted into several separate guideline documents
Guidelines for monitoring of marine acidification Determination of alkalinity Update on QA/QC procedures Change of unit from µmol/l to µmol/kg (following Dickson’s definition of alkalinity) Determination of pH Detailed and valuable feedback recieved from German experts Spectrophotometric determination validated in the Baltic region Spectrophotometric determination is superior, but instruments suitable for monitoring are missing pH scale must be selected
Further review needed: dissolved oxygen, hydrogen sulphide and salinity Guidelines for determination of hydrogen sulphide Guidelines for determination of dissolved oxygen Options for validation of accurcy are limited, interlabory comparisons are the only option Guidelines for determination of salinity A few notes on quality control added
Upcoming documents: Guidelines for use of autonomous devices in monitoring (see document 2MA-18) Guidelines for water sampling/use of CTD/processing of CTD data drafts are being prepared o corresponding ICES guidelines are due for review o
