Retrospective View on 100 years of radar 50 years radar in EuMC 1st European Radar Conference (EuRAD2004) by Prof.Dr. Leo P Ligthart Chairman EuRAD2004 October 2019
Introduction Radar Ø European Microwave Conference (EuMC) started in 1969 Ø Microwaves in radar got much attention in all EuMC Ø Evolutions in radar after 1969 Ø From radio detection and ranging of objects to quasi-instantaneous wide-band object sensing in Ø amplitude, phase and polarization Ø Ø From analogue to (partly) digital signal processing Ø From monodisciplinary to interdisciplinary Radar systems issues in EuMC in the last 30 years v Modular (UWB and multi-band) radar subsystems v Advanced antenna arrays including integrated array processing v Digital radar waveform generation at transmit and digital IF processing at receive v Progress on radar systems and networks with integrated communication functions in military (including security) and civilian applications v Space-, air-, earth-based and subsurface UWB remote sensing radar
1st European Radar Conference (1) - Last 30 years military and civil radar innovations in Europe liberated our initiative for establishing an annual European radar conference - Growth in radar paper submissions from Asia in EuMC gave support for our initiative in which more Asian contributions could be accepted The 1 st European Radar Conference (EuRAD) was held in 2004 and integrated - within the structure of European Microwave Week (EuMW) 1 st EuMW was organized in Amsterdam in 1998. The 7 th EuMW (2004) returned - to Amsterdam with EuRAD2004 as big innovation - EuRAD2004 run from 14 till 15 October 2004 - EuRAD covers microwaves subjects for military and civil radar dealing with technologies up to systems and applications - EuRAD focuses on interdisciplinary activities in radar developments allowing for novel applications of microwave technologies in radar systems Remember: 2004 is exactly 100 years after the invention of radar .
1st European Radar Conference (2) In 1904 the German inventor Christian Hülsmeyer patented his ‘telemobiloscope’ Demo’s of his apparatus in 1904: detection of ships on the river Rhine in Cologne and Rotterdam Exactly 100 years after this invention the European Radar Conference (EuRAD) has its birth in Amsterdam on Thursday October 14, 2004 Establishing EuRAD was discussed by me in the 2001 EuMA Board meeting Decision EuMA Board: 2002 2 scepbcs Non-scepbc H. Meinel my wife and D.Vanhoenacker

EuRAD2004 conclusion The launch of EuRAD 2004 was extraordinary and beyond my expectabon - Historical Radar Booth as part of EuRAD2004 - Exactly 100 years aker the German Chrisban Hülsmeyer established his first patent on radar - Historical booth showed 100 year’s history of radar and the Dutch contribubon to this history - Radar start in The Netherlands by Hülsmeyer’s demonstrabons in 1904 - Book on the Dutch contribubon to the history of radar was gik for all EuMW2004 delegates - Excursion to the LCF (modern air command frigate of the Royal Dutch Navy) in Amsterdam harbor) equipped with an acbve phased array radar and a surveillance radar with digital beamforming - Workshop Integrated Topside Design - EuRAD Radar Award ($5000) sponsored by Raytheon - EuRAD laid the basis for largest Radar conference - EuRAD support by major companies and insbtutes
