Remote Learning in District 58 Board of Education Update April 13, 2020
Timeline of events since our last Board Meeting (March 9th) March 9, 4:45 pm - Dr. Carmen Ayala instructs superintendents that “it is imperative districts begin working on emergency e-learning plans immediately” March 10-11 - The administration creates District 58’s Emergency E-Learning Plan March 12 - District 58’s e-Learning Plan submitted to the Dupage Regional Office of Education for approval; Administrative team meetings take place to review plans March 13 - Statewide suspension of in-person instruction announced by Gov. Pritzker; School days are declared “Act of God Days” 2
Timeline of events since our last Board Meeting (March 9th) March 16th - District 58 staff receives the Emergency e-Learning Plan overview and develops e-learning activities through Spring Break for all students March 17, 18, 19, 23, 24 - E-Learning Days for all students, 5 full instructional hours per day - designed for maximum flexibility (per e-learning plan guidance) March 27, 8:30 pm - ISBE announces discontinuation of “Act of God Days” and releases new guidance for remote learning March 30 - District administration finalizes DRAFT Remote Learning Plan and shares with full administrative team and DGEEA leadership 3
Timeline of events since our last Board Meeting (March 9th) March 31 - Feedback and input from building administration and DGEEA leadership is incorporated into the Remote Learning Plan (DGESP and DGCMA feedback and input was also sought) April 1 - Remote Learning Plan is shared with District 58 staff and families April 6 - Teachers prepared remote learning lessons and experiences April 7 - Remote learning began in District 58 4

District 58’s Remote Learning Plan Highlights Weekly assignment lists posted in advance in a single ❑ location for students and parents Maximum student engagement minutes as ❑ recommended by ISBE Direct Instruction on new concepts provided ❑ asynchronously Weekly SEL/check-in meetings via Zoom for elementary ❑ homerooms and middle school homebase classes Individualized remote learning plans for special ❑ education students 7
District 58’s Remote Learning Plan Highlights Teacher feedback on student progress; grading may be ❑ included as a feedback form, not a punitive measure Prioritization of connection with students ❑ Plans to solicit staff and family feedback ❑ The use of 5 planning days to review and potentially ❑ adjust the remote learning plan Flexibility in all directions, recognizing everyone’s ❑ at-home situation presents unique challenges Preparation for the transition back to on-site learning, ❑ whenever that may be 8
This Week in Remote Learning Feedback Surveys to families and staff will be sent out ❑ on the morning of April 15th (day 6 of Remote Learning) Feedback will be processed by the administrative team ❑ on the afternoon/evening of April 16th, including revisions or modifications to the Remote Learning Plan April 17th is a Remote Learning Planning Day ❑ Faculty meetings at 8:00 am to discuss any revisions ❏ or modifications to the plan Teachers will prepare the following week’s activities, ❏ incorporating any modifications or suggestions 9
Moving forward April 27 - Report to the Board of Education on remote learning, ❑ including review of feedback from April 15th survey April 29 - Second survey released to families and staff ❑ April 30 - Final day of the current Gubernatorial Disaster ❑ Proclamation; however, District 58 has developed a potential remote learning calendar should the proclamation be extended If extended, May 1st would be a remote learning planning ❏ day; remote learning would continue on May 4 10

Moving Forward Q and A Video Series by Dr. Russell ❑ Goal is to answer community questions as they arise ❏ Maintain close contact with the Governor’s Office, ISBE, ❑ IDPH, the DCHD, and the DuPage County Regional Office of Education Review District plans for major events and adjust ❑ accordingly (Select 58, Distinguished Service Awards, Promotion, Retirements, Summer School, ESY, etc.) Transition back to on-site instruction (spring or fall) ❑ 12
