To provide US Military men and women with non-lethal ancillary equipment and other necessities, thereby improving their safety, readiness, comfort and/or efficiency in areas of combat operations. To provide the American public with a means to


  1. To provide US Military men and women with non-lethal ancillary equipment and other necessities, thereby improving their safety, readiness, comfort and/or efficiency in areas of combat operations.

  2. To provide the American public with a means to directly support the Military that serves them and to establish a mutually beneficial relationship that promotes a positive understanding between soldier and citizen.

  3. To provide equipment and supplies that are either not provided by our Government or are better designed than Military issue for specific unit or mission operations. (This is NOT to imply that our Government does not provide the basic needs for our troops) We Supply The Edge That Often Makes The Difference!!

  4.  Support-A-Soldier is a Non-Profit 501(c)3 Charitable Organization  Support-A-Soldier is supported entirely by volunteers. 99% + of all funds collected goes toward providing gear and equipment for our troops.  To Date Support-A-Soldier has sent essential gear to over 200 American Units, Combat Teams and individual men and women in combat zones around the world.

  5.  Support-A-Soldier was founded by Barbara VanHorn, proud mother of a 2007 Iraqi War Veteran. While deployed, he asked for issue items not able to be readily replenished or for mission specific gear he could not afford.  She complied using money out of her own pocket. And then there were others in his unit…And then a Special Forces “A” Team …And then... And then…  Single Minded Determination  A Mom with a card table, photographs, an attitude, a mission and lots of businesses and organizations to visit.

  7.  Request received – (A Unit/Team/Soldier/Family)  Review by a committee that separates “want” from “need” and makes recommendation to the Board  Board review and approval sent for purchase with available funds or by individual sponsors  Items sent to APO’s only  Troop Request: Tell us if/when item(s) received; communicate with donor; be safe; pay it forward
