  1. Re-Entry Plan for 2020-2021 School Year at MGS

  2. THE PROCESS WHAT IS OUR PROCESS AND HOW WE MAKE DECISIONS IN MANAGING THE SITUATION WE ARE IN? All our decisions with respect to this situation ● are guided by MAC’s and the Public Health and Ministry of Education directives. The different management bodies and ● consultative groups who helped us with our decision: MAC Executive committee & Institutions ○ Department MGS admin team and staff ○ Parent body (Survey) ○

  3. Our plan will be founded on the following principles: GUIDING PRINCIPLES We will follow MAC’s and the Public Health and ● Ministry of Education directive. The safety of children, students, and staff comes first. ● Children and student learning will continue for all ● grades. Meeting and addressing the social and emotional needs ● for our students. Required funding is allocated and available. ● Parents feedback and engagement is essential to the ● success of our plans. School authorities have the flexibility to do what is best ● for their community.

  4. RE-OPENING PLAN MGS will reopen with conventional in-person delivery of teaching and instruction, with enhanced health and safety protocols. Students will be going to school every day, in classes that reflect standard class sizes. There is an option for online learning for parents who do not wish to send their child/children to school for in-person learning.

  5. WHAT IS THE IMPACT ON OUR BUDGET? Increase in staffing teachers, support staff ● Increase in cleaning expenses required for more cleaning ● frequencies for high-touch surfaces, daily deep cleaning, sanitization , etc. Increase in cleaning and PPE supplies ● Equipment for all classrooms to be DL ready ● More-laptops for teachers with better video capabilities ● Cost for DL platforms: Zoom, Mathletics and support ●

  6. HEALTH AND SAFETY RESOURCES ● Sick Kids Hospital Toronto. COVID-19: Guidance for School Reopening, July 29, 2020. ● Ministry of Education. Ontario’s approach to reopening schools for the 2020-2021 school year ● Ministry of Education. Ontario Operational Guidance During COVID-19 Outbreak-Child Care Reopening ● Ontario Workplace Safety and Prevention Services Guidance on Health and Safety for Places of Worship During COVID-19 ● Health Canada’s Hard-surface disinfectants and hand sanitizers (COVID-19) for approved products

  7. HEALTH AND SAFETY MEASURES P.1 Routine screening for all staff and students ● Strict stay-at-home policy for any students or staff exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 (even if ● symptoms resemble a mild cold) Hand washing/sanitizing when entering classrooms, as well as before and after eating ● Continual reminders and signs posted of the importance of respiratory etiquette (e.g., cover ● coughs and sneezes, avoiding touching the face and disposal of used tissues promptly, followed by hand hygiene) Guiding foot traffic flow through entrances and hallways by using markers on the floor to ● maintain the social distancing requirements of 6 feet Discouraging large gatherings suchs as assemblies ●

  8. HEALTH AND SAFETY MEASURES P.2 Enhanced environmental cleaning and disinfecting recommendations, including daily cleaning ● for all areas of the school, washrooms and high touch surfaces. Surfaces cleaned several times a day and a regularly scheduled deep cleaning when students are not present. An isolation and supervised room for children who develop symptoms during the day until ● picked up by parents No sharing policy, all students should have their own supplies ● Where sharing of equipment is required, the equipment should be cleaned between uses ○ ● There will not be any plans for field trips at this time. ● Clubs and organized sports will be offered if physical distancing is possible and equipment and spaces are cleaned and disinfected between each use.

  9. WEARING MASKS Non-medical/cloth masks will be mandatory for ● students in Grade 4 and above. Masks will not be required, but encouraged for ● students in kindergarten to Grade 3 in common spaces. Medical masks are required and will be provided for ● teachers and all school staff members. Plexiglass shields will be installed on main office ● desks.

  10. MENTAL HEALTH 1. Professional learning for principal and educators to support the approach to school re-entry, as well as throughout the school year 2. Collaboration with child and youth mental health agencies 3. School Mental Health Ontario will provide school boards with a professional learning framework and toolkit to support the mental health of all students that can be tailored to the school level for different audiences. 4. Teachers will receive training on implementing the new Math Curriculum. The new strand aims at developing confidence where students can cope with challenges and think critically. The strand reflects a commitment to students well-being.

  11. PHYSICAL DISTANCING With physical distancing requirements of at least one metre, we are considering: Parent drop off and pick up protocols ● Entry to the school protocols ● The start and end times for school days ● Staggered first day of school for all grades (orientation of how ● the school looks like and will operate) Lunch: eaten in classroom and staggered times ● Washroom use ● Movement in hallways ● Use of auxiliary spaces ● Salah will be performed in classes ● Classroom layout (reorganization of rooms to allow for more ● physical space) Remove excess furniture ○ Desks will not face one another and be 1 meter apart ○ for kindergarten-grade 3, and 2 meters for grades 4-8

  12. NON-ESSENTIAL VISITORS The school will limit parents, volunteers for ● classrooms, guests, and others visitors. The school will use video and telephone to interact ● with families, where possible, rather than in person. Records (e.g, name, contact information, time of ● arrival/departure, screening completion, etc.) must be kept up to date and available to facilitate contact tracing All visitors must wear a mask and self-screen. ●

  13. Safety for students or staff with underlying medical conditions For students with underlying medical conditions or risk factors, parents should consult their ● child’s physician to consider the health risks and make a decision that will best support the child. Students who are at risk can choose to continue with their learnings online. ● School staff should also consult a physician and discuss available options and support with the ● Principal. If a student has symptoms related to allergies or a pre-existing medical condition Students should be tested at least once before returning to school and have a negative ● COVID-19 test result. These symptoms would be their baseline health status. As long as the cough or runny nose is always the same and does not get worse, the student can attend school.

  14. SCREENING PROTOCOLS Parents are required to complete a daily screening checklist for their ● children prior to entering the school, which will be provided. All employees are required to complete a self-screening/assessment ● which includes a temperature reading and answering a set of questions. Visitors should also use the self-screening questionnaire to determine ● whether they may enter the school All screen information will be kept confidential. ●

  15. PROTOCOL IF EXPOSED Records (e.g., name, contact information, time of arrival/departure, etc.) will be kept up to date ● and available to facilitate contact tracing. Information local public health units (PHUs) and will adhere to recommended course of action ● such as school closures, sending notifications, or making other recommendations. A public health team will investigate the case to find out when the symptoms developed and ● support the school to minimize the spread. Most likely only the group of students and staff who came in close contact will be required to ● stay home for 14 days, and not the whole school. Parents will be notified if a case of COVID-19 is confirmed at school and public health officials ● will contact those who were in close contact with the case.

  16. STAYING HOME WHEN APPROPRIATE Refer to the Ministry of Heath’s COVID-19 Reference Document for Symptoms (PDF) In order to prevent the spread of infection, students and staff who ● have signs/symptoms of COVID-19 should not attend school and should go to their primary care provider or an assessment centre for testing. Direction will be provided by the local public health unit for those ● who have had an exposure to a confirmed case of COVID-19 or who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 on when they may return to school.
