Quick update on the census. If you have any questions, contact Daisy! 1
As an extension of the annual monitoring programme that was set up in 1986, Seabirds Count was developed by the Seabird Monitoring Programme Partnership. A partnership consisting of 19 organisations, all of which share the goal of monitoring seabird populations effectively in order to conserve our internationally important seabird numbers. And as you can see a real mixed pot of government, academia and NGO’s. 2
Over 10,000 known breeding colonies in the SMP database a sample of these for each spp are surveyed yearly, but the census needs to cover all these. In addition we produced a new survey method and plan for urban nesting gull population with the aim of getting a better understanding of their fates, adding a further 5400 squares to visit. 3

Counts available as soon as input into database, but may not have been validated or checked. Regional statistics etc won’t be available until official launch. 5
Prioritisation; target sites that previously held 90% of UK population. Check against other portals for sites we didn’t know about. Urban gulls covered for first time. 6
More control, improved and consistent naming, can extract by SPAs. 7
NE funded a scoping project. Essentially an online mapping and visualisation tool. Might incorporate SMP but should be complementary not overlap. Will allow visualisation of trends at various scales, GIS downloads, additional functionality to sit alongside database. FUNDING IS REQUIRED. 8
