Purpose of the Forum. The general feeling is that together we are stronger, We now have a voice locally and we can make use of that voice when speaking to Government and other agencies. I would also like to see a lot of networking and knowledge sharing coming from these events and we deliberately left time on the agenda for people to make contacts. As one wise Managing Director told me not long ago –“ We are all in Engineering and Manufacturing together and we should be helping each other out”. But I stress – this is your forum and please let us know if it is not doing what you need/want from it. Aish Technologies/Business Improvement Techniques. I would like to thank Aish Technologies for releasing their staff and of course the four people that gave us the presentation: Peter Ferns, Mike Harvard Taylor, Adam Shepherd & Nigel Wright. Thank you Aish. If anyone would like the Aish Technologies B-IT Slides these are available from me by request. We are working locally with a number of organisations on Business Improve Techniques and the feedback has been extremely good with all organisations saying that they have found it beneficial. I would be happy to discuss how business Improvement techniques could benefit your business. Apprenticeships. Thank you to Jim O’Neil and his overview of Apprenticeships. I think that most people will agree, Taking an Apprentices on has lots of positives to an organisation and Jim and his team are steadily building a reputation for excellence in this sector. AS Mentioned Ofsted awarded our Engineering Apprenticeship Training Programme as Outstanding – putting The Bournemouth and Poole College amongst the top 10% of Colleges in the UK. To find out more about Apprenticeships please do contact me. Did you know, For example, that we can offer Apprenticeships in Accountancy, Customer Service, IT and Business Administration as well as those in Engineering. 14-19 Diploma Richard Warburton gave a whistle stop overview of how this exciting new area for Education and Training is expected to work. Some of you have already expressed interest in finding out more about this programme. As always I am happy to put you in touch with the right people should you need to find out more. Bournemouth University I also mentioned that the University has two really good schemes at the moment. Internships (minimum of 5 weeks commitments) The Employer pay a graduate Notes from the Engineering and Manufacturing Employers Forum – 25 th Feb 2010 Held at Bournemouth and Poole College
minimum wage and Bournemouth University will pay you £100.00 per week to the employer. Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (This will give you a graduate, who is mentored and supported by the University and has a brief to look at an area of research for your business or business area). I have attached some information on knowledge Transfer Partnerships and I am happy to put people in touch with the right people at Bournemouth University – Just let me know. MAS-SW Whilst I am plugging other areas - MAS SW (Manufacturing Advisory Service South West) operate a very good programme called PAC (aimed at Productivity) which is match funded. If you would like more information about this very useful programme I would be happy to put you in touch with Nigel Jones and Charles Hill of MAS SW. Other Speakers We have already made efforts to get someone from the RDA or local council along for the next meeting and are making efforts to get some better schools representation. Other suggestions Here are some of the comments made – Some good ideas and suggestions which we will try and move forward. To attract 14-19 year Olds into Engineering we need to show them career progression of some of the attendees IE Craft – Supervisory – Management – Executives. To demonstrate that Engineering is not dead end. Would it be appropriate to setup a forum Engineering Exhibition group to Actually attend the School Career Days. As a group this would not put too much time of Individual business while maximising benefit to Engineering and Attracting 14-19 year olds to the Industry – Sell it the Kids! By Pass the teachers. I think these two ideas might work (entering a school Careers fair under the banner of the Engineering and Manufacturing Employers Forum) – Who else would be interested in this? Corporate Responsibility, Sustainability and Ethics – Essential for success or a painful interruption! This sounds like an interesting topic for discussion – what do others think? Units within Qualifications, Units within NVQ’s C&G2800. How can we choose and Select units relevant to our business? Lots of comments about involving Schools – We will invite local schools to the next event.
