  1. PTA Meeting August 19, 2014

  2. Title I in Bellevue ● Belleaire is one of 2 Title I elementary schools in Bellevue Public Schools. ● Title I funds are used to provide additional staff and to support preschool programs for four-year-old children living in the district’s attendance area ● The funding is reviewed annually and may be changed based on student population.

  3. What is Title I? ● Title I is a federally funded program that provides additional support to schools with an increased number of students from lower income families. ● The additional support is provided above and beyond the services that already exist in the district.

  4. What must the schools do in order to receive the supplemental funds? ● Develop a comprehensive needs assessment ● Develop schoolwide improvement strategies ● Hire only highly qualified staff ● Hire teachers endorsed in the area in which they are teaching ● Hire paraprofessionals with at least 48 college credit hours.

  5. Cont... ● Provide professional development for staff ● Demonstrate active parent involvement ● Develop transition plans for preschool children ● Include teachers in assessment decisions ● Provide effective and timely assistance to students who experience difficulty meeting standards

  6. School-Age (K-6) Programs ● Buildings receiving Title I funds for schoolwide programs are provided additional staff based on available funds for that building. ● The additional staff provides students with instruction and support in academic areas identified in the schoolwide improvement plan.

  7. Targeted Title I Preschool Programs ● Children attending the Targeted Title I Preschool Program must meet at-risk criteria as determined through a screening process. ● Students meeting this criteria are assigned to a preschool program. ● Teachers use the Creative Curriculum and Teaching Strategies GOLD Assessment.

  8. More about preschool... ● Preschool classes are five days a week and are structured into half-day sessions, including the opportunity for students to eat lunch at school. ● Students must reside in a Bellevue Public Schools attendance area and turn four years old on or before July 31st, to be eligible for the Targeted Title I Preschool Program.

  10. MAP Testing ● Test 3 times a year (Fall, Winter Spring) ● MAP results help us identify the skills and concepts students knows, and what he or she needs to learn in order to keep growing in reading and math skills. ● With accurate and timely information teachers can target instruction so every student is making progress

  11. MAP Testing Cont... ● Been used since the Fall of 2012 for all students in grades K-8th. (9th graders will also be taking the MAP assessment this year). ● MAP tests are online, computer-based assessment and are easy to administer.

  12. MAP Testing Cont... ● The MAP assessment adapts to each individual student and his or her ability, measuring what the students knows and needs to learn. ● The MAP assessment allows us to measure individual student academic growth over time, independent of grade level or age.

  13. MAP Testing Cont... ● individual scores are available immediately after testing, so teachers are provided with timely access to information they will use for instructional planning and school improvement.

  14. Q & A Are the MAP tests given as the state assessment in Nebraska? The MAP tests do not replace the NeSA tests. However, the MAP tests do fulfill the state accountability to administer a nationally normed assessment and they are aligned to the Nebraska State Standards.

  15. More Q/A What information will I get from MAP tests? Students’ scores are reported as RIT scores. The RIT scale is a nationally normed, equal interval scale developed to assist with the interpretation of test scores over time. It allows us to measure student learning over time.

  16. More Q/A When will I see how my child performed on the MAP?

  17. More Q/A Parents and students will receive a student performance report after the spring test session so they can see the extent of the student’s academic growth over the school year. Teachers will also share information about student scores at the fall P/T Conferences. Parents may also request a student report from the school.
