  1. Updates on Program Initiatives 3 CBCRP Council Meeting June 7, 2019

  2. CBCRP Program Initiatives 2000 2005 2010 2015 2020 2025 Special • 9 sub-initiatives • Environmental PI1 • 26 grants Research effects • ~ $21 million • Health disparities Initiatives (SRI) • Environmental causes California Breast • 15 sub-initiatives PI2 • Health disparities Cancer Prevention • 18 grants to date • Population-level interventions • ~ $17 million to date Initiatives (CBCPI) • Targeted interventions Program • Environmental contributors PI3 Initiatives 3 • Health disparities • Population-level prevention interventions (PI3)

  4. PI3 Focus Areas • Identify and eliminate environmental contributors to breast cancer. • Identify and eliminate fundamental causes of health disparities with a focus on breast cancer in California. • Develop and test population-level prevention interventions that incorporate approaches that address the needs of the underserved and/or populations experiencing disparities in the burden of breast cancer.

  5. Recent Activities • March 22/25: Calls with PI3 Steering Committee/Strategy Advisors to refine Environment and Disparities topic lists • April: Delphi survey to prioritize Environment and Disparities topics • May 15: Global Challenge Event Showcase and Competition • May 15-16: PI3 Steering Committee/Strategy Advisor meeting Upcoming activities: • June: Steering Committee meeting to select first round of topics • Rest of 2019: Concept paper development • March/April 2020: Next PI3 Steering Committee/Strategy Advisor meeting

  6. Delphi Survey (April 2019) • Iterative multi-round process that aids decision-making because respondents see first-round results from group before participating in second round. • Round 1: – Rate each topic on: • How well does the research topic increase knowledge and potentially create solutions? • How will the research dramatically change how or what breast cancer research is conducted in the next decade? • How does the research address special interest in California? • Round 2 (after seeing results from Round 1) : – Rank top 10 ideas – Weighted Ranking: allocate 100 points across ideas – Which 5 topics would you eliminate?

  7. Delphi Survey Results: Environmental Contributors

  8. Delphi Survey Results: Health Disparities

  9. SC+SA Meeting Outcomes: May 15-16, 2019 • Initial road map of research topics for PI3 (3 years). Steering Committee and Strategy Advisors will continue to refine • List of research topics for first round of concept papers (drafts by for Feb 2020) – Initial volunteers to serve on concept paper workgroups – Steering Committee to decide which topics to pursue and refine concept paper workgroups • List of research topics needing additional research or refinement by February 2020 to determine if they should advance • Feedback on the fund allocation strategy – Steering Committee to further refine

  10. Next Steps • May/June: Steering Committee members/Strategy Advisors refining batch 1 topics • June: Steering Committee meets to select batch 1 topics • July – February 2020: Batch 1 concept paper development • March/April 2020: SC+SA meeting to discuss concept papers
