Prince William County Public Schools 2019-20 School Calendar Modification School Board Meeting March 20, 2019 Dr. Jennifer Coyne Cassata Director, Office of Accountability Mrs. Rita Everett Goss Associate Superintendent for Student Learning and Accountability 1
Background • Prince William County School Board approved the 2019-20 school calendar on October 17, 2018 • First day of school: August 26 • Last day of school: June 12 • The Virginia General Assembly passed legislation (HB 1652/SB 1005) that removes the prohibition on school divisions starting school before Labor Day without a waiver • School divisions can now start up to two weeks before Labor Day • The legislation does require that schools be closed on the Friday before Labor Day 2
Proposed Change to Approved Calendar • Change Friday, August 30, 2019 to a holiday (schools and offices closed) • The original calendar had 181 days so a day can be removed and still meet state requirements • No change would be required at the beginning or end of the year • Contracts would be adjusted for the 2019-20 school year to incorporate the new holiday • Future calendars will build in this required holiday from the outset 3
Next Steps • Governor signs the legislation into law by March 26, 2019 • School Board approves the calendar adjustment at April 3, 2019 meeting • New calendar will be posted on the website after April 3 • Communications will publicize the change on the website and through social media outlets 4
