Previous Plan: 2014-2016 • Had 3 priority areas of focus: (1) Changing the culture of alcohol consumption in Port Hedland (2) Reduction of the secondary supply of alcohol to youth (3) Preventing and reducing volatile substance use (VS U) • Outcomes/ achievements listed in the back of the Draft consultation document
Proposed 2018-2020 Plan • Evaluation, review and multiple workshops led to the development of 4 priority areas of focus: (1) Changing the culture/ normalisation of alcohol use in Port/ S outh Hedland (2) Addressing the impact of alcohol on families and young people (3) Reducing alcohol-related violence in Port/ S outh Hedland (4) Addressing needle syringe disposal issues and raising awareness of local NS P programs
Priority 1 –Actions For Focus Changing the culture/normalisation of alcohol use in Port/South Hedland: • media • communications • public awareness campaign • enhanced Alcohol Think Again messages • distribution of health and harm reduction information • a local AOD services directory and training
Priority 2 –Actions For Focus Addressing the impact of alcohol on families and young people, the actions focus around: • education sessions and supporting young people when they get involved with senior sporting activities • promotion of the Good S ports Program • AOD education in our schools • distribution of information related to alcohol • community education sessions targeting families addressing alcohol related harm • promotion of existing AOD services for families and youth.
Priority 3 –Actions For Focus Reducing alcohol-related violence in Port/South Hedland, the actions focus around: • monitoring trends and promoting the support services available for family domestic violence • educating children on creating a safe place • investigating after-hours “ safe overnight stay” place • promoting homeowners to seek S ection 152 Dry Houses • investigate the development of a banned drinker’s register • alternatives to violence workshops • creation of a local men’s group • delivery of men’s specific wrap around workshops
Priority 4 Addressing needle syringe disposal issues and raising awareness of local NSP programs: • appointment of a Pilbara NS P Coordinator • record and map locations of incorrectly disposed of needles • identify needle hotspots • education and reporting pathways for the community for incorrectly disposed of needles • review signage around safe disposal units • determine if the current disposal units are adequate • promote safer use and disposal of needles • training to litter collection staff, individuals and organisations with safe needle disposal training.
Feedback to Date • 88 submissions to date • Most feedback has been received from manned shopping centre stall, Facebook, S urvey Monkey surveys and email • High level of support for the draft Plan as proposed • Other issues raised • Liquor restrictions • Management of behaviour at S outh Hedland S quare • Concerns regarding the use of ice in the community • Needle exchange issues • Welfare card • AOD testing of welfare recipents
Next S teps • Public comment period closes 1 st March 2018 • All Working Group members are going back to their Chair/ CEO and getting sign-off on what “ Leader” actions organisations have been assigned • Important to get TOPH support or feedback for TOPH listed “ Leader” items • The Working Group will be meeting to go through all submissions received Friday 16 th March 9.30am-11.30am • Work towards finalisation of Plan by end of March
