Made up of the 10 southern-most states of Sudan, South Sudan is one of the most diverse countries in Africa. It is home to over 60 different major ethnic groups, and the majority of its people follow traditional religions. Independence did not bring conflict in South Sudan to an end. The 2013-2015 civil war displaced 2.2 million people and threatened the success of one of the world's newest countries. In spite of intervention form the UN the President and Vice President fail to agree and civil unrest continues. HM Foreign & Commonwealth Office advise against all but necessary travel to South Sudan. As a result SVP members form England & Wales rely on regular meetings and contact with members in South Sudan. Queuing for food at an IDP camp run by the SVP WHAT HAS TO HAPPEN? Stop arms to reduce violence. Ensure protection for civilians. Encourage inter-communal dialogue & reconciliation. Provide urgent humanitarian aid to avert hunger. Support the building of democratic institutions during the transitional period. Prepare for transparent elections & peaceful transfer of power. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT
