  7. Military Preparedness Updates • ASVAB & Military Reporting • How will TEA obtain ASVAB data? • TEA will use enlistment data to determine if the student passed the ASVAB. Students must pass the ASVAB to enlist in the military. • What will be the “passing score” on the ASVAB? • TEA will use enlistment data to determine if the student passed the ASVAB. • What is the difference between the ASVAB and the ASVAB CPE? • ASVAB is the exam given to enter the military and determine placement within one of the branches and is available to students in grades 11 – 12. • ASVAB CPE is the Career Preparation Exam which is given to determine interest in careers. This is the indicator listed in PEIMS for the exam which is required to be available to students. • Will districts be required to track and match students with ASVAB and enlistment? • TEA is working to verify this data through the Department of Defense. • When must a student enlist in the military to count for the bonus? • The fall after high school graduation • This will follow the timeline for postsecondary enrollment.

Navy National Defense Cadet Corps (NNDCC) • The NNDCC program is modeled on the NJROTC program except it is primarily funded by host schools. • The cost incurred by the school includes instructor salaries, student uniforms and daily operational expenses. The Navy supplies curriculum material for NNDCC instructors and students, and the unit equipment necessary to execute the curriculum."

NNDCC Specifics • Minimum 50 students enrolled (this is less than JROTC) • Be enrolled in and attending a regular course of instruction in a grade 9 through 12 at the school hosting the unit. • Be above 14 years of age. • Be physically qualified to participate in the school’s normal physical education program and in all NNDCC activities. • Be selected by the NNDCC instructor with the approval of the school principal or his/her representative. • Maintain acceptable standards of academic achievement and an academic standing that warrants at least normal progression leading to graduation. • Maintain acceptable standards of conduct. • Comply with specified personal grooming standards. Common sense and good judgment apply to the attainment of these standards. Standards will not be relaxed so as to reflect disgrace on the naval service

NNDCC- Subjects taught • CITIZENSHIP -- Instill values and responsibilities of good citizenship. • NAVAL ORIENTATION -- A basic introduction to the Navy -- its customs, traditions, and way of life. • NAVAL OPERATIONS/ORGANIZATION -- Familiarizes the student with national strategy and naval forces, daily military operations, training, exercises, drills, and shipboard organization. • NAVAL HISTORY -- History of the United States Navy from the colonial period to the present. • NAVIGATION -- An introduction to piloting and celestial navigation. • SEAMANSHIP -- An introduction to the general subjects of seamanship that include anchoring and mooring, ship handling, small boats, weather, ship construction, and steering and propulsion systems. • LEADERSHIP -- An ongoing study of the principles and practical application of leadership with emphasis on providing opportunities for students to exercise and develop their own leadership abilities. • NAUTICAL ASTRONOMY -- A study of astronomy and its application to celestial navigation. • ELECTRONICS -- An introduction to electronics as the basis for shipboard radar, sonar, communications, and guidance systems. • OCEANOGRAPHY -- Provides information on the collection and dissemination of hydrographic and navigational data of the world's ocean systems. • DRILLS, COMMANDS, AND CEREMONIES -- Includes individual, squad, platoon, and company close order drill; rotation of command; physical fitness; personnel inspections; and parade in company review.

What does an NNDCC do? • Promotes Patriotism • Promotes community service • Develops leadership potential • Develops a high degree of personal honor, self-reliance, individual discipline and leadership • Promotes high school completion • Provides incentive to live healthy and drug free • Develops informed and responsible citizens • Develops respect for constructed authority • Promotes an understanding of the basic elements and need for national security • Provides information on the military services as a possible career

Benefits of an NNDCC • Learn basic elements and need for national security and their personal obligations as Americans. • Enhance the image of the military in the eyes of the community • Encourage initiative, individuality to develop natural gifts, teach self- control, develop personal character, responsibility and qualities of integrity, loyalty, and dedication. • Derive Self-Esteem • Motivation • Advanced promotion to pay grade E-3 upon initial enlistment of Navy, or Airforce and pay grade E-2 in the Army and Marines . • Naval Science Instructors is authorized to nominate 3 eligible cadets to the U.S. Naval Academy

  14. Next Steps • Receive notification from Navy • Hire Instructor during the spring 2020 • Add courses to academic planning guide • Recruit Current 9-10 th grade students at NHS • Purchase materials and planning from May-August 2020
