The book of Proverbs takes its title from the first word in the Hebrew text which is usually translated as "proverbs." That word, mashal , is a general Hebrew term for any kind of comparison . It could describe a parable, similes, allegories, wisecracks, songs, one-liners, maxims and even doctrinal revelations.
Proverbs is Wisdom Literature • Wisdom Literature describes a way of living a life - a way of understanding the world. • Wisdom seeks to understand the world in physical and social environments and is practical not philosophical . It is reflective, rational, and concerned with truth and knowledge. • Wisdom is concerned with choosing the proper course of action for well being in life .

Prudent • The word prudent or prudence in Proverbs comes from five different Hebrew words: biyn, aram, aruwm, sakal, and ormah. These words are synonyms that refer to various key traits of a prudent man - cunning, smart, sensible, circumspect, and able to discern between options. • Proverbs 22:3 The prudent sees the evil and hides himself , But the simple go on, and are punished for it. • Wisdom not same as Prudent - Proverbs 8:12 I, wisdom, dwell with prudence - I find knowledge and discretion. 13 but the fear of the LORD is to hate evil ; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverted mouth, I hate.
The Second Book The second Solomonic collection begins in Chapter 10 and goes through 22:16. It consists of about 375 individual proverbs .

Egyptian Wisdom Books • The Instruction of Amen-em-Ope . From the time just before Solomon. It is written for the youngest son and has thirty chapters . His purpose: The guide for well-being , To set one straight on the paths of life, and make him prosper on earth; To let his heart settle down in its chapel, as one who steers him clear of evil; To save him from the talk of others , As one who is respected in the speech of men. • Solomon’s purpose for his 30 : “it will be pleasant if you keep them within you, That they may be ready on your lips. So that your trust may be in the LORD …to make you know what is right and true, that you may give a true answer to those who sent you?

The Fifth Collection Proverbs 30 and 31 Proverbs 30 is a lesson from a father to rebellious sons. Proverbs 31 is a lesson from a mother to a wayward son. Each parent has a “burden” to share. Proverbs ends with a son who listens and admires his mother for taking time to teach him the hard lessons.
