  3.  Take an interest in your child’s participation in music  Have your child play / sing for you often  Have your child play for family and friends  Take your child to “live” performances / concerts / events  Listen to music together  Talk about your experience / participation in a musical performing group

  4.  Make sure your child has the following equipment: ◦ proper working instrument ◦ portable music stand ◦ binder or folder ◦ supplies needed for instrument – i.e. reeds, valve oil, chin rest, sticks, mallets

  5.  The Importance of Home Practice  Practice=Homework  Creating the habit of practicing for your child  How to practice: Practice techniques that work Practice vs. Playing  Setting practice goals  Importance of using a metronome  The 5 coin/chip method   Important Questions to ask your child  “What are you supposed to practice for this week?”  “What did you learn today in band/orchestra/chorus?”  Practice 10-15 minutes every day throughout the week instead of playing longer on one or two days.  Students want immediate gratification  Encourage your child to practice regularly

  6.  Private Teachers ◦ The benefits of private teaching/coaching ◦ Tri-M vs. Professional Instructors ◦ How is private instruction different from school instruction? ◦ Private teacher assignments vs. school assignments ◦ How to choose the appropriate private teacher

  8.  What are the “Payoffs”? ◦ These classes are now part of the school day ◦ Grade counts as part of your child’s GPA ◦ Colleges look for this type of continued participation in a discipline when selecting students. ◦ Scholarships are possible! ◦ Lunch vs. performing group: Performing group wins!
