Piggeries were developed where swine are fed fresh or cooked garbage. One expert estimates that 75 pigs could consume 1 ton of refuse per day.
Garbage was given serious consideration and a crematory was erected for incinerating garbage, while landfilling is becoming a popular disposal method.
6,950 tons, averaging 22.9 tons per day was burned at a rate of $1.39 per ton. Garbage was collected with 4 horse-drawn carts and 6 men. The incinerator operated 10 hrs. a day with 3 men. Each ton of garbage burned used 185 lbs. of coal.

What happens to the composting we send to Land & Lakes? What about Backyard composting? Why is it better to compost than throw it away? Can we get compost? Will we have to add a truck? Are there other benefits to this program?

“Don’t make the mistake of underestimating the implications of small changes. Simple doesn’t mean unimportant. Even the simplest actions can make a difference when multiplied by many.” Crissy Trask, It’s Easy Being Green Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
