  1. Performance Classes for inclusion in Royal schedule Simon Collin & Max Tweedie Hawkes Bay A&P

  2. In the show ring what are we interested in? • ‘The best quality cattle with show appeal’ • That are going to breed the next crop of the same (hopefully better)

  3. Performance in show ring currently • Cow production classes • Cow weight / calf weight (adjusted for age) • Nothing for young cattle • Nothing to guarantee they will pass on their performance to their progeny

  4. EBVs are working • EBVs are meeting expectations and are better than raw data for choosing the best cattle to breed from, because; • They take all information into account- that might make some cattle bigger than others • They take into account information on relatives, heritabilities (how much is passed on) • Proven by the B+LNZ Genetics Beef Progeny Test • Uses 50 bulls every of 5 breeds across 2200 cows on 5 stations • Put sires EBVs to the test to see if the calves are what the EBVs say Don’t want to throw out stockmanship, performance is now part of the comm farmer toolkit

  5. 2 proposed new classes • Performance Yearling heifer • Performance Yearling bull

  6. Have used this technique with success at… • 2016 New Zealand Beef Expo- Performance Heifer class • 2016 Hawkes Bay Show- Local All Breeds Performance Heifer and bull class • 2017 New Zealand Beef Expo- Performance Heifer class • 2017 Hawkes Bay Show- Local All Breeds Performance Heifer and bull class

  7. 2 proposed new classes • Performance Yearling heifer • Performance Yearling bull • 75% emphasis on EBVs • 25% on visual • Must be recording with Breedplan for the traits in the class

  16. Deciders • In the instance there is a tie; there will be a countback, the animal with the most performance points will be judged the winner • In the instance there is more than one class in a given section; points obtained from the performance class scoring (EBV section only) will be made available to the judge along with the relevant EBV bar graphs. It is the judge’s decision as to how the performance information and visual placings are combined/used to award the champion animal

  17. Keen to do it at your show? Happy to judge the classes for you or give you a hand
