PFPP Mission and Vision Mission: To further the preservation, revitalization and viability of Palmer Park - a Detroit park for the good of everyone. Vision: Our vision is to create an urban, regional destination and daily recreation site that will promote an active and healthy community. Values: Preservation of resources/Restoration & preservation of history/Equal benefit & access to the park/Creation of a safe environment/ Responsiveness to users & the community/Timeliness in our actions/Collaboration & cooperation with city, community & stakeholders .

Recreation Committee Sharon Gamblin, Chair • Walking Club – Latricia Wright – Meets on Monday, Tuesday + Thursday 6-7:30 pm, near Splash Pad lot • Tai Chi Lead – Peter Guenther – – Will begin at 7:00-8:30 pm on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 until September 4, 2018 – Meet at the corner of Ponchartrain and Seven Mile Rd. • Bike Riding – Henry Ford II – Thursdays from 6:30-8:00 pm started on April 5 th – October 26 th – Meet @ the Splash Park parking lot, ride the park & surrounding neighborhoods • Yoga Lead – Kerri Trahan, Yoganic Flow – Meets on Saturday morning @ 9:00 am, near urban garden- all levels – Indoor at PP Community House every week, outdoor starts on May 26 th • At Bat Program – Delrisha Hayes – Baseball program for at-risk youth … hope to bring to Palmer Park
Successes of the Tennis Program in 2017 • Approximately 125 kids participated year-round • 1st year, USTA Jr. Tennis Team: Palmer Park Pumas • Students attended USTA Diversity Camp @ Ohio State • Annual Trip to Kalamazoo-National USTA Boys 16-18 Championship • Included classroom sessions: – One at Detroit Unity Temple with renowned jazz bassist Marion Hayden – taught African American music to tennis players – Other studying tennis watching & analyzing pro videos – Judge Szymanski • Played & won in scrimmages against other tennis programs • Sent 25 new kids to the annual Scott King tournament for novices • Won the Community Tennis Association of Michigan - $500 prize • Selected by the Johnson Law Firm as Charity of the Year -
Successes of the Tennis Players/Program in 2017 • Two of our students, Briah and Taylor O'Neal were chosen as the Michigan ambassadors for the USTA's Net Generation - USTA will sponsor them to go to a National training facility in Florida with other junior tennis players - They will be part of a kicko fg for this new facility • PFPP Joined Greater Detroit Tennis Alliance forming a partnership with Chandler Park , Stoepel Park, Clark Park and Motor City Tennis Club to do some after school tennis programs in schools located near those parks & then funnel children to tennis programs at those parks.
Goals for Tennis Program – 2018 • Introduce Yoga and Exercise Instruction on alternating Mondays • Increase the number of participants in the program/continue USTA participation and engagement • Hoping for newly resurfaced TENNIS COURTS construction begins in 2018… completed in 2019! • Looking to bring an international women’s tennis tournament to Palmer Park in 2019…. Planning will start in 2018
Preservation & Beautification Clinton Gri ffj n, Chair 2017 Accomplishments • Maintenance of Butterfly Garden • Several trash clean up days organized • Continual engagement with organizations/community partners. 100’s of volunteer hours logged • Garden bed expansion & Greenhouse construction started • 100's of pounds of vegetables harvested & taken home by volunteers, along with you pick by volunteers • Graduated gardener youth class from Detroit Unity Temple
2018 Goals for Palmer Park Garden 2018 Goals • In-ground Pumpkin Patch and Squash Planting • Greenhouse finished + Work tables built • Natural fencing project around the garden • Four more benches built • Education classes… to be announced • PLANTS, PLANTS AND MORE PLANTS • New Farm – Community Engagement Manager – Molly Leebove starting on May 10 th HOME DEPOT & VOLUNTEER GARDEN DAYS: MAY 18 TH + 19 TH Volunteer hours will be announced on our website for the season!
